A very worn, cast copper alloy late Early Medieval zoomorphic stirrup terminal, of the Anglo-Scandinavian period. The upper part of the terminal is a hollow U-shaped triangle, one return of which is missing from an old worn break. The U-section tapers to an internal ledge on which the iron footrest of the stirrup would have been located and soldered. An internal cusp leads to a solid triangular projection the outside face of which is moulded, probably representing a zoomorphic beast's head, but is now far too worn and eroded to be resolvable as such. The form of…

Cast copper alloy openwork Anglo-Scandinavian stirrup mount of Williams Class A, Type 12. Openwork lozenge shape with a pierced attachment loop at the top and a rear facing straight and flat flange at the base. Four sub-circular holes in the main body create a saltire cross, with moulded raised knops around the frame and in the centre. The pierced attachment loop is blocked with iron corrosion with further iron concretion around a circular rivet hole through the flange Circa AD1000-1150.

Worn and corroded cast copper-alloy object, probably a late Saxon stirrup mount. The form is that of a semi-cylindrical sheath with a slightly convex exterior. There are twin collars just short of either end from which the radius narrows slightly to form flat semicircular-sectioned, but now eroded ends. On the reverse an axial hollow with a coarse granular surface runs from end-to-end with flat edges to the semi cylinder. The moulded exterior decoration has the appearance of interlinking plant tendrils reminiscent of Winchester type decoration of…

Copper alloy Anglo-Scandinavian diamond shape openwork stirrup mount. Circular apex attachment loop with corroded iron rivet. Lozenge-shaped body with openwork sub-circular holes at each internal angle. Raised boss projecting at each junction of the lattice giving seven bosses in total. Punched lines between the bosses and around the apex loop. Basal flange projecting towards the reverse with single iron fixing rivet. Williams Class A type 12. Circa AD1000-1150.

Fragment of copper alloy Anglo Scandinavian stirrup terminal. The terminal end is a trilobate shape with two transverse raised collars at it's base. On the reverse is an integral U-shaped socket in which the corner of the stirrup would have been cupped. Within the socket is white powdery substance probably the remnant of lead based solder. The metal is a characteristic reddish brown colour often associated with artefacts from the late Saxon and Anglo Scandinavian period. There is no indication of iron corrosion. Length 25.7mm, width 14.9mm, thickness 10.37mm, weight 9.6g. In a study o…

Copper alloy and Iron Anglo-Scandinavian openwork stirrup-strap mount. Flat everted base with a lingulate shaped openwork body. There are four piercings in symmetrical pairs either side of the median, the upper pair are broadly oval and the lower are kidney-shaped. Moulded decoration on the front face follows the lines of the openwork, which when combined with the shaped symmetrical exterior to the body represents the head, brow ridge and snout, of a beast. This representation is further endorsed by a moulded decoration at the centre of the base which represents the scaled body of the…

Late Saxon, Williams class A, Type 1, copper-alloy stirrup-strap mount. Sub-lozengiform shape which is very worn and covered in ferrous corrosion at either end. The pierced semi-circular lobe at the apex has a circular hole blocked with the remnants of a large iron rivet. There are similar rust-encrusted circular holes either side of the base, set just above a perpendicular flange that projects from the inside face. The upper front face is inlaid with a double chevron design and the lower half with what is perhaps a tendril or leaf motif. The centre of the mount is riven with a transv…

Copper alloy late Saxon, Williams Class A, type 1 stirrup strap mount. The main body of the mount is rectangular with a triangular apex. There are small knops approximately halfway up either side with further knops on the two upper corners and halfway up the triangular apex. The rounded point of the triangular top section is pierced by a circular hole forming a loop as the means of attachment. There are two further circular holes one on either side of the basal corners, one of which is blocked with iron corrosion. On the back of the base edge there is a narrow perpendicular ledge. The…
