Incomplete copper alloy early Saxon cast Cruciform brooch. The headplate, knob/s, pin, and spring are all missing, but otherwise, the brooch is complete. The steeply arched bow widens slightly in the centre, and has a medial arris along its length,  with a transverse moulded triangular decorative bar feature at either end. The lower bow transitions into the panel of the upper foot, with the perpendicular catchplate on the reverse (when viewed from the reverse, the catchplate curls to the left). The front of the panel …

Solid copper alloy side knob from an early Saxon cruciform brooch. The domed knob is fully round with facetted sides to the terminal end, leading via a waisted section to a twin-grooved collar with a flat end, in which there is a linear slot.  A small circular axial hole runs through the entire body from end to end. Circa AD 475-550.  Length 10.9mm, diameter 9.0mm, weight 2.73g

Fragment of solid copper alloy side knob from an early Saxon cruciform brooch. The body is flat on the reverse and comprises a semi-cylindrical attachment end with a waisted middle section, leading to a half-round terminal knob.  A rectangular break to the upper side of the attachment end suggests a missing tab at this point. There is grooved circumferential decoration running around both end sections. A small circular axial hole runs through the entire body from end to end. Circa AD 475-550.  Length 17.5mm, width 9.5mm, thickness 7.5mm, weight 5.40g

Copper alloy side knob from an early Saxon cruciform brooch. The body is hollow on the reverse and comprises a rectangular block, flanked at one end by a narrowed trapezoidal tab projecting from its lower inner edge, then via with a waisted section leads to a half-round terminal knob on the other. A remnant of the iron pin axis bar runs axially along the reverse, through entry holes in the hollow rectangular section and the end knob. Circa AD 475-550.  Length 21.4mm, width 10mm, thickness 6mm, weight 9.53g

Copper alloy early Saxon cruciform brooch. The brooch is missing its spring and pin but is otherwise complete. Small rectangular undecorated headplate without side wings. Integral waisted top knob with no trace of any original side knobs present. Rectangular mouldings at both ends of a steeply arched bow which has a C-shaped section and an upper arris. The C-section foot has a triple transverse moulding, terminating in a stylised horses head with chevron shaped eyes and flaring nostrils. The catchplate survives on the upper foot and is complete. Incomplete copper alloy early Saxon small long brooch. Spring and pin mechanism are missing and the headplate and foot eroded at the extremities. The sub-square headplate is undecorated with a D to slightly C-shaped cross section bow that springs upward from its lower edge. The tapering bow has an undecorated slight arris and a sub-rectangular cross-sectioned moulding at the junction of both headplate and foot. The foot section tapers via a flat panel to two raised transverse bars, before flaring out widthwise to a flat lozenge-shaped terminal with damaged end. The reverse of the head…

Fragment of small copper-alloy early Saxon bow brooch. The fragment consists of a much broken undecorated flat head plate with single longitudinally aligned pin lug on the reverse. The lug has broken across the central circular hole; no trace of iron can be seen around the lug. A fragment of incurved edge survives on the headplate, next to the top of the bow; from one edge of the headplate the bow rises abruptly in a curve, but terminates quickly at an old transverse break. The fragment is likely to be from a small long brooch dating to c. 450-550 AD.

Copper alloy early Saxon cruciform brooch fragment. Rectangular central panel of the headplate survives, but both wings are mostly missing from old breaks. Half-round single waisted integral knob at the top of the panel with worn twin transverse grooves either side of the waist. At the lower end of the panel there are twin transverse grooves where it kicks up and transitions to form the D-section bow, which truncates at an old break at around two thirds of its original span. Copper alloy footplate fragment of an early Saxon chip carved great square headed brooch. The head, most of the bow, pin, pin assembly, and the left side lower segment of the lobe and footplate, are all missing from old breaks. The upper footplate survives with the integral stub of the lower bow and right side lobe attached. The extant footplate is essentially sub-circular but with the lower lateral quadrants having a symmetrical concave exterior profile curving in and down to form the narrower but now missing lower footplate. The lower stub of the bow is facet…

Incomplete heavily worn and corroded copper alloy Scandinavian-style disc brooch. Sub-circular with domed front and concave reverse. Only a slight vestige of an irresolvable design remains on the front face, a dark brown to green patina having be stripped from the surface during its time in the ground. The reverse has a single transverse pin fixing lug broken across its central circular hole, with a single longitudinal catchplate lug diametrically opposite. The pin itself is missing. The domed shape and pin arrangement are more characteristic of an Anglo Scandinavian/Scandinavian broo…

Incomplete, worn and corroded copper alloy probable ansate brooch. It consists of a narrow D-sectioned strip of metal slightly flattened at both ends with a shallow arched bow in the centre. The bow appears to be separated from both flattened ends by transverse decorative ridges, although these may just be remnants of surviving patina. On the underside of one flat end there are two perpendicular semicircular lugs with a central slot, around which there is heavy iron concretion, obscuring a hinged pin housing. On the underside of the opposite…

Fragment of middle Anglo-Saxon copper-alloy (bronze) brooch of Elmsett type (Weetch type 16). Originally cross-shaped, only one flaring arm now survives. It has concave sides to the arm, the more complete arm curving increasingly tightly around a cut-out which is therefore more oval than circular. The end of the arm is convex. The fragment has two circular holes; one is smaller (1.6mm diameter) and is in the centre of the arm within a reserved circle. The other is larger (2.7mm diameter) and closer to the edge of the arm, so close that it has now broken through the edge of the brooch.…

Fragment of copper alloy early Saxon cruciform brooch probably Martin type 2 or 3. The head and bow survive but the entire foot, pin and spring mechanism are missing. The head is a raised rectangle with its longest sides aligned axially. Flanking wings are approximately the same size as the head but thinner. The top of the head and the two wings have integral top and side half-round domed knobs. Fragment of copper alloy early Saxon small long brooch. Foot, spring mechanism and pin are all missing. Square head with outward flaring arms to the top and sides extending to crescentic ends, forming a trefoil shape. The bow springs from the base of the head initially in a flat rectangular shaped cross- section but then narrows to form a convex sided shape with a plano-convex cross-section and a slight upper arris. The top and sides of the head, start of the convex bow, and where the ends of the arms begin expanding are all delineated with twin transverse lines. The expanded ends of …

Cast lead late Saxon disc brooch. Circular (33mm diameter), 1.9mm thick flat body with two integral lugs diametrically opposed on the reverse face. Both lugs are bent over into loops but no evidence of a retaining pin survives. The front face is decorated in moulded relief with an equal arm cross. At the centre and in the middle of each arm of the cross is a raised circular pellet. The pellets on each arm are crudely joined back to the centre pellet with curved diverging and then converging double strands forming a further inner cross or quatrefoil arrangement. Copper alloy late Early-Medieval cast convex disc brooch of Jansson type II a. Very worn relief surface decoration with the vestiges of Borre-style imagery in the form of three cat-like animal heads facing the centre of the brooch between a trefoil knot. The hollow reverse has a pin-lug aligned with the outer edge with a broken pin-stub through its centre. Diametrically opposite is a broken catch-plate set at right-angles to the outside edge of the brooch. It is 23mm in diameter. The brooch can be compared with Margeson, The Vikings in Norfolk, 1997, p. 21, fig. 22. This example dates…
