Late Early Medieval tin-copper alloy pseudo-nummular brooch of Weetch type 2.Ai. The brooch is circular with a raised, cast, design on the front of a left facing radiate crowned bust with multiple lines of drapery below and to the lower right and a pseudo legend to the left all within a double line beaded border. The nonsense legend appears to read cHc or possibly oIID. An upside down V to the right of the head probably represents to tie from a diadem. The back is lain with the stubs of a broken pin lug and catchplate. These are arranged on opposites sides and run vertically down t…

Fragment of a gilded copper alloy Early Medieval, probably eighth century, item, probably a disc brooch. The fragment is part of a plate and broadly triangular in shape with the shorter edge slightly convex. The object bends back slightly towards this edge but this might be damage. All the edges are damaged with patinated breaks, it is possible the curved edge is only slightly abraded as the design appears to respect it while the other breaks run across the design. The front is decorated with a raised design probably chip carved, although the indents are filled with mud, making the…

Treasure case 2014 T440: Disclaimed, returned to finder Description: Incomplete early medieval silver disc with an incised design. Approximately 15% of the brooch is lost to a patinated break down one side. The rim is bent forward slightly, more pronounced in some places than others. Despite the broken edge, it is possible to see that the disc was not perfectly circular when complete. The front of the disc is incised with an equal-armed, saltire cross within a circle. The circle joins the terminals of the cross-arms with no division and provides the outer border of the design. I…

Fragment of a cast copper brooch of Early Medieval date. The fragment consists of part of the headplate or one branch. It is flat on the back and slightly convex on the front, thicker towards the centre and thinning towards the edges. All the edges are broken with very worn, patinated breaks but the upper right and right edges appear almost complete while those on the left and bottom are broken where the plate is thicker (the labelling of the edges is based on the orientation shown in the photograph, this may, or may not be correct). On the front is a very worn design, probably broadl…

Fragment of an Early Medieval lead alloy item, possibly an annular brooch. The piece is about one fifth of a circle with irregular breaks at either end. It ios wide with only a small circle left in the middle. The inner and outer edges appear complete with a slight lip at the edges on the back, which is otherwise flat. The front is decorated with a raised interlaced design. To one side is a triple stranded long curve ending at one end in the break and at the other in a double transverse line with two opposing spirals rising from it. The inner spiral is a double curve ending in a point…
