A gold artefact comprising a rectangular strip decorated with beaded wire. The strip has parallel sides and straight ends, but is slightly distorted and bent out of shape at one end. At one corner is a small additional gold strip, applied to the back of the larger strip but now partly torn away and twisted at a right-angle. This smaller strip is pierced, presumably for attachment. A small lumpy accretion on the adjacent corner may be the remains of a second attachment hole. At the opposite short end of the strip is a seam-like feature where the end of the strip appears to have been de…

Date: Probably Viking, c. 870-950 Description: Moulded gold bar of roughly D-shaped section, part cut, part broken at each end, tapering towards one end. Smooth on curved edge, rougher on flat edge. No test marks, but slight cut close to one end, near line of final cut edge. Dimensions: 9.5 x 7 x 4.5-6mm Weight: 3g Discussion: The form of the bar is not diagnostic, but the way in which it has been partly cut then snapped off at each end is typical of Viking hack-silver and hack-gold. The use of cut fragments of gold and silver as bullion in Viking England was relatively commo…

A stirrup-strap mount of early-Medieval date (AD 1000-1100). It is a 'Sub-triangular Class A mount' according to Williams (1997), broadly fitting his Type 11 in terms of its overall shape, particularly the apex loop and the flange, but is decorated with a coiled animal rather than the typical lion. Therefore, its decoration more closely matches those of Type 10 mounts. The stirrup-strap mount is 57.60mm long, 34.15mm wide and 3.35mm thick throughout. It is sub-triangular and has a trilobed apex (14.90mm long by 15.80mm wide) which is perforated to create a loop. There is another pe…
