A possible pendant consisting of a stone or opaque glass bead encased in a silver frame. The bead is in the shape of an oblate spheroid (a flattened sphere). The silver casing is flat against the bead. It comprises: a lozenge-shaped plate at one pole with four curving arms radiating from the sides of the plate towards the equator; a 5 link chain around the equator; a pentagonal plate covering the opposite pole connected to the equator by five more curving arms that project from the corners of the plate and meet the chain at the junction between each link. The pentagonal plate projects…

A copper alloy and silver early medieval strap end (AD c. 750 - c. 1100). The strap end fits into Thomas (2003) Class B, Type 4: multi-headed. It consists of a long shaft with rounded ends. One end is split to accommodate the strap. There is a zoomorphic terminal at each end. Each head is snake-like with circular eyes and raised browridges over each eye. The head at the opposite end to the strap has a raised triangle behind the eyes and the mouth is formed by a groove around the end. The mouth at the attachment end forms the slot for the strap. The strap end is further decorated with …

A glass late Roman to Anglo-Saxon bead dating to the fourth to seventh centuries AD. The bead is globular and decorated with white and pale blue crossed waves and yellow and green eyes.
It is made from opaque black glass with six pellets of opaque yellow glass arranged around the edge. Each yellow glass pellet has a translucent green glass pellet near its centre. These pellets are known as 'eyes'. Additionally there is a pattern of raised lines of opaque white and pale blue glass, known as crossed waves. These lines are incomplete, indicating that some of the glass has worn away. T…

Object type: BRACELET

County: Nottinghamshire
Workflow stage: Published
A gold ring constructed from two twisted gold rods of circular section, with smaller twisted wires in between. At each end is a globular terminal with a twisted wire collar marking the junction between the terminal and the band. The ring is severely bent into a 'W' shape, but appears to be complete. A section in the centre has come slightly open, the rest remains largely tightly wound.
Description:
The ring from Stragglethorpe superficially resembles both twisted gold torcs from the Iron Age, and twisted gold arm-rings from the early medieval period. An Iron Age dating seems unl…

Treasure Case 2005 T392
Date: Late 9th-11th century
Description: A gold ingot of short, sub-rectangular section, the top and bottom faces hammered flat and there are also hammer marks on the sides. It would have been cast in a simple open mould either roughly cut in stone, or perhaps drawn in the earth with a stick.
Discussion: Viking period gold ingots are more unusual than silver. A large number of silver ingots of the Viking period have been found mainly in hoards in England, Ireland and the Netherlands, as well as in Scandinavia. Silver ingots from the region of the Danel…

Treasure Case 2000 T199
Date: First quarter of the 7th century
Description: Boar's head terminal made of gold and inlaid with garnets. The board's head is damaged at the back where it has been torn away from a larger object. Its structure is complex: the shape of the head is built up using deep cells with robust walls which are soldered onto a sturdy base-plate. The cells are largely covered by sheet gold except where they contain small, well cut garnets which are skillfully used to create the boar's characteristic features: the tusks are clearly defined with triangular garnets,…

Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Nottinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete copper alloy early medieval "ball-ended" strap fitting dating to the 11th century AD, missing one of its ends. The surviving part of the object is formed from a roughly rectangular-shaped plate, the complete end terminating with three circular knobs. Decoration consists of pairs of openwork shapes: two circles at the complete end, then two small trefoils, then two larger trefoils (one of which is incomplete due to the break. The plate is also decorated with incised lines. On each of long edges of the plate is a copper alloy rivet. Overall, the object measures 33.4mm long…

Date: Probably Viking, c. 870-950
Description: Moulded gold bar of roughly D-shaped section, part cut, part broken at each end, tapering towards one end. Smooth on curved edge, rougher on flat edge. No test marks, but slight cut close to one end, near line of final cut edge.
Dimensions: 9.5 x 7 x 4.5-6mm Weight: 3g
Discussion: The form of the bar is not diagnostic, but the way in which it has been partly cut then snapped off at each end is typical of Viking hack-silver and hack-gold. The use of cut fragments of gold and silver as bullion in Viking England was relatively commo…

An incomplete copper alloy early-medieval/Anglo-Saxon/Viking strap end (AD c.800-c.1100), missing its attachment end. Overall, the object measures 34.8mm long, 13.2mm wide and 4.5mm thick. It weighs 6.4g. The strap end has broadly parallel sides and a trapezoidal cross-section. It has a pointed zoomorphic terminal, which is moulded and represents an animal head with large semi-circular eyes and ears. Above the head is a short rectangular shaft with bevelled side edges. This part is decorated with a zigzagged pattern which may represent a snake. Above the shaft is a moulded stylised hu…

Description: An incomplete early medieval gold pendant. The pendant is lunate in shape with terminals curved into a spiral. These terminals are now twisted and distorted, one forwards and one backwards. Originally the spiral terminals would have curled inwards underneath the pendant. The left-hand terminal (as viewed) has a tiny protrusion of gold sheet on the bottom, decorated with a filigree figure-of-eight motif. This feature is missing from the right-hand terminal,…
