A broken and fragmented late early-medieval copper-alloy probable stirrup sheath/side (c. 11th century AD). The fragment is comprised of a main rectangular convex strip which turns at one end through an oblique angle; the hollow channel running along the reverse of the object would have enclosed one of the arms a stirrup (Williams 1997, 1). An incomplete cast copper-alloy stirrup-strap mount of late early-medieval to medieval date (c. 11th century). A large part of the left hand side of the mount (when viewed from the front oriented to the creatures depicted upright) has broken away, but it is clear that the mount was once of pentagonal form. There were originally three rivet holes on the upper side, in only the central one of which, a dome-headed rivet of iron, survives. The object consists of a central plate with boss; to one side the arm and its terminal loop has been lost. The arms are D-shaped in cross-section, with a flat reverse. At what would have been the centre of the complete link there is a low oval boss which is hollow on the reverse. The complete arm terminates in a circular loop that features three rounded knops, one at each cardinal point. The object is a red-brown colour with some small patches of light-green corrosion product.
