A slightly abraded but virtually complete early-medieval copper-alloy strap-end of Thomas's Class B, Type 1. The split attachment end is wedge-shaped with a double perforation at the incurved attachment end. The corroded remains of iron rivets survive in situ in the holes. The attachment end is defined by a pair of engraved transverse grooves on the front, which are echoed by a pair before the terminal. The strap-end tapers gradually between the two sets of grooves; the terminal is slightly expanded. The front of the object is otherwise undecorated, and the rounded terminal is no…

A cast copper-alloy buckle with integral plate of late early-medieval date (c. 10th-11th century). The frame is a slightly asymmetrical, elongated D shape with a possibly zoomorphic protrusion at the outer edge. The plate is slightly narrowed as it meets the frame, but widens slightly and gradually towards the attachment end, by which point it is approximately the same width as the frame. Adjacent to the frame is a perforation around which the pin would have been looped; the pin is now missing. Towards the terminal is a rivet hole in which the corroded remains of the iron rivet are …

A fragment from a late early-medieval cast copper-alloy stirrup terminal (c. 11th century AD). The hollow back would have enclosed one of the arms of the lower part of the stirrup (Williams 1997, 1). The flat base is abraded on all sides and the recess above appears to contain iron corrosion product. The terminal is zoomorphic and rendered in three dimensions, representing a beast's head with a snub-nose with flaring nostrils. Around the nose are tendril-like moulded lip lappets with tight curls at their tips. The tendrils enclose a V-shaped incision which would have continued int…

A cast copper-alloy stirrup-strap mount of late early-medieval date (c. 11th century AD), not longer fully complete having suffered some minor losses. It can be categorised as being of Williams's Class B, Type 2, Group 4 (Webley 2014, 354-355; fig. 7b/note 64). The mount is sub-rectangular, and D-shaped in cross-section. It has a squared off top with a central perforation; the rivet has ben lost but there is iron corrosion product adjacent to the hole on the front. The edges of the mount bow out slightly and are each formed of double-headed serpent or dragon. Each of the four head…
