A complete, but broken into two conjoining parts, cast copper alloy strap fitting (strap union ,harness link) of Early Medieval (Anglo-Scandinavian) date (1000-1200). The strap fitting is irregular in plan and D shaped in cross section. It consists of a central sub-circular domed boss from which two horizontal arms project. Two smaller knop-like projections extend from the boss on the upper and lower edges; these are also D shaped in cross section. Each horizontal arm tapers and then expands to form a lozenge (diamond) shaped strap junction. The arm is a narrow D shaped bar with no ev…

Folded sheet metal strap end of early medieval date 800-1100 AD. The strap end is formed from a single sheet of cast copper alloy which has been folded to form a V into which a leather strap or belt would have been inserted and secured by two copper alloy rivets. The strap end is sub-rectangular in both plan and cross section. The upper face has been decorated with a series of incised / chip carved designs. The reverse face is plain and undecorated. The positioning of the two rivet holes is unusual, in that one is placed near the open terminal, whilst the other is positioned half-way …

Cast copper alloy fragment of unknown date or function: It is highly likely that this fragment is either part of a pull handle from a piece of furniture of post medieval date (1600-1800) or alternatively be an unusual variant of a small – long bow brooch of Early Medieval date (600 – 800 AD). The vast disparity between these two functions is caused by the unusual nature of the head-plate; in that pierced head plates for the incision of rivets is almost unparalleled in brooch typology - the use of a gilt finish is also highly unusual. These two points may actually point to a much la…

An incomplete cast copper alloy zoomorphic strap end of later early medieval (Anglo-Saxon) - 9th-10th Century date (800 - 1000 AD). The strap-end is probably best described as late Saxon, or possibly Anglo-Scandinavian in style. It is broadly sub-rectangular in plan with two parallel sides which taper to a blunt zoomorphic point. The profile is sub-rectangular and also slightly bowed. The cross section is sub-rectangular. The edges of the strap-end are also slightly bevelled. The strap end measures 35.2 mm in length, 17.9mm width, is 4.8mm thick and weighs 10.01 grams. The majority of…

Cast copper alloy knife or sword fitting of probable 11th century date. The fitting is irregular in both plan and profile being broadly formed from an oval hoop, with sub-triangular projections (prongs) from one edge. The projections from the long sides of the hoop are much longer than those from the short edges. The artefact has suffered from movement in the soil and it is likely that this has distorted some of the edges and resulted in the compression of the two longer triangular extensions. The inner edge of the fitting has a relatively rough and unfinished surface. There are also …

Early Medieval sceatta Series D, type 2c continental runic sceat (Abramson, T. 2006, p.97-98). 'heavy type' c. 700-715, probably minted near the Rhine mouth. Metcalf distinguished between 'heavy' (1.1-1.3grams) and 'light' (<1grams) ones of this type. The light ones tend to be a bit more random and are possibly contempory copies (forgeries). A parralel for this one can be seen in Metcalf: Plate 9 example 173. Thanks are extended to Laura Burnett and Frank Basford for help identifying this coin
