A cast copper alloy buckle plate of later early medieval or medieval date 1000- 1100 AD. The fitting is highly decorative but its function is unknown, two small rivet hole are present as is an axis bar, this could suggest function as a locking plate, strap end or possibly brooch. The artefact is sub-triangular or wedge shaped in plan and D shaped in cross section. The reverse face is flat and undecorated. Two integrally cast D shaped lugs project from the narrow edge; these are pierced and an iron axis bar extends between them. The wider end is pierced in two places; the remains of a …

Cast copper alloy zoomorphic D shaped buckle frame of early medieval or medieval date (1000 -1200 AD). The frame is an irregular Oval (D shape) in plan with the apex of the frame being heavily swollen tapering to the junction with the axis bar which is off set from the plan of the frame. The buckle plate and pin are lost. At the mid point of the frame is a recessed notch which would have held the pin flat, this is opposite the centre of the axis bar. From the swollen mid point the sides taper in both width and thickness to a slight axis bar. Both ends of the buckle frame are decorated …

Incomplete fragment from an early medieval (10th-11th century) cast copper alloy buckle with in integrally cast plate. The surving fragment consists of the plate and a small section of the rear of the frame. Broadly the fragment is sub rectangular in plan and profile. The frame of the buckle is heavily worn and the two breaks are much abraded, The plate is pierced by three holes two at the end of the plate and one centrally at the centre nearest the frame. This central hole (diameter 3mm) is likely to have held a sheet metal pin for the buckle. The other two holes are filled with iron…

Cast copper alloy buckle plate of probable 11th - 12th century date (1000-1200 AD). The plate is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and is decorated with cast open-work. In cross section the plate is broadly sub-rectangular. Along one short edge is the fixing point for the plate to attach to the buckle frame. This fixing is formed by two edges of the plate being rolled back upon themselves to form an irregular tubular hinge. At the centre of this junction is a rectangular recess in the plate; the purpose of this is to hold the pin of the buckle. One of the two rolled hinges is broken; th…

Cast copper alloy single looped buckle of probable early medieval or medieval date, c. 1000 - 1200 AD. The buckle frame is sub-circular (oval D shape) in plan and sub-rectangular in cross section. The pin is missing but it is likely that it would have been formed from a sub-rectangular length of copper alloy. There is no pin rest present or constriction on the frame to enable the pin to lie flat. Where the axis bar meets the edge of the frame are two small projections, it is likely that the axis bar fitted onto a rectangular shaped plate formed from a sheet of copper alloy. The plate …

Cast copper alloy buckle frame with integrally cast plate of early medieval (probable Anglo-Scandinavian influenced) 11th century date (950-1100). The frame of the buckle is complete but broken and misshapen by movement in the ploughsoil. Overall the design is irregular in plan with a broadly oval (D shaped) buckle frame and sub-rectangular (wedge shaped) strap fitting / cast plate. The buckle measures 61.5mm length, 29.8mm width, is 10.7mm thick and weighs 23.99 grams. The buckle frame is faceted and has a broadly sub-rectangular cross section. In shape originally it would have had…

Cast copper alloy single-looped buckle with copper-alloy plate, of probable 11th- to 12th-century date. The buckle frame is broadly D-shaped with an oval cross-section. The frame is relatively small in size with a thick outer edge ending in terminals in the form of much abraded stylised animal heads, possibly dogs. These are cast and each consists of two oval or sub-triangular relief ears, similar relief oval eyes set within grooves, and two small pellets for the nose. The preservation on one face is much better than the other. The bar is offset, held between the undersides of the dog…
