Copper alloy mount. Cast oval plate with four teardrop-shaped hollows on its display side, one now open, and with the stubs of three integrally cast prongs on the back. The integral prongs would usually point to a post-medieval date. However, the reddish cast to the metal, the worn surface condition and the – for that later period – unusual form may rather point to an Anglo-Scandinavian context for this object. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 950-1050 Length: 33.5mm, Width: 18.9mm, Thickness (clear of rivets): 1.9mm, Weight: 5.33gms

Copper alloy and iron mount. Cast copper alloy plate with concentric moulded decoration, of thickness 1.8mm at its outer edge. The decoration comprises, described from the centre outwards: a plain flat central boss, a gutter separating the boss from a thin and possibly cabled strand and continuing beyond it; a thicker cabled band in a gutter with a further narrow strand beyond it; and finally a plain flat border. Gilding traces are trapped in the relief of the decoration. The back bears the corroded stub of a ferrous metal fixing pin. Suggested date: probably Early Medieval, 410-850 D…

Copper alloy possible mount fragment. Cast straight-sided plate with a collared rounded end with a rivet or other copper alloy inset; if indeed a mount the object is presumably broken at its narrower end. There is the suspicion of a stepped [at expanded end] and partly keeled form [towards the putative broken end] to the display side, though no section views were available to confirm this point. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 900-1100 Length: 51.3mm, Width: 8.8mm, Thickness: 3.5mm, Weight: 9.42gms

Copper alloy possible mount; an identification as a die stamp was offered, but was rejected by Kevin Leahy. A triangular plate with interlace decoration on one side only. Bent at its midpoint. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 850-1000 Length: 28.6mm, Width: 13mm, Thickness: 1.2mm, Weight: 1.87gms

Copper alloy mount. A thin straight-sided plate of possibly plano-convex section with incised linear decoration on its display side, plain on the flat back, with a rivet passing through a drilled hole towards one end. Bent and broken at the broader end, probably across a further fixing point and perhaps by rough removal from its setting. The source record suggests this could be 'an early medieval pin shank [probably]', an identification for which this reporter sees scant reason. Copper alloy mount. Cast chip-carved mount with a thin layer of rust covering large areas but not obscuring the nature of decoration. The rust probably comes from the iron rivets which once attached the mount to an important object. The back is plain. This is probably from an ecclesiastical context [cf. Whitby parallels] such as a book cover or a shrine. Another part of the same object was reported from Melton Ross, making this a ‘find of note’ for its significance in tracking the members of a single Viking raiding party. An accompanying text extract suggests an ‘8th …

Copper alloy mount fragment. A cast fragment bearing interlaced zoomorphic decoration on one side which may include the sinuous neck and biting head of a beast, and with two adjacent apertures with two or more branches to one side broken to suggest a continuation. The metal has a reddish tint which may hint at an Anglo-Scandinavian date. Suggested date: possibly Early Medieval, 950-1100 Height: 23.7mm, Width: 22.9mm, Thickness: 3.0mm, Weight: 5.52gms

Copper alloy and iron mount fragment. A fragment of cast copper alloy with straight edges and ends and retaining substantial rusted iron accretions, inluding a bolt or fixing, and staining from the apparent loss of another. The object is twisted and torn as if by rough removal from its setting. The display side bears a wandering interlaced ladder-pattern crudely incised; the source record identifies this as Viking-Age. Copper alloy mount. Cast zoomorphic mount in the form of a beast, perhaps a boar with protruding tapered snout, forward-falling ear and a small mouth agape below, and with powerful hindquarters represented by a large comma-shaped openwork curl with a small hind leg passing over its rearward part. Some detail of the creature’s muzzle appears moulded in low relief on either side. The creature surmounts an integrally cast concavo-convex gutter with a rounded end, and with a slightly flared and longitudinally ribbed socket behind its rump. The hollow of the gutter is filled with an o…

Copper alloy mount. Cast plate with a seven-pointed asymmetrical slightly concavo-convex star form at one end, a constricted midpart, and a smaller trefoil or lis-shaped end. Neatly incised lines at the star end divide four rays into three compartments each, the effect resembling the sails of a windmill; similar lines also subdivide the features at the smaller end. A small [diameter 1.5mm] fixing hole is drilled through the centre of the star, with a larger [diameter 2mm] hole at the smaller end. A reddish-brown tint is often a feature of Viking Age metalwork. Copper alloy probable mount fragment. A small irregular object with an integral pin or lug of diameter 2.9mm projecting from its back. What remains of the mount itself now resembles the emaciated snout of a tiny wolf with jaws agape wearing a bowl-shaped helmet of modern style with an incised line at its rim, but with ears projecting to either side - the maker’s intention was perhaps different to the effect described. Copper alloy, silver and iron mount. Triangular copper alloy plate of copper alloy with a rounded raised edge surrounding a sunken silvered or inset plate bearing zoomorphic decoration in Salin Style 1 (information kindly proferred by Dr Kevin Leahy). The back of the object is rust-coated and this points to its having been detached from an iron setting. The inset motif originates as a distorted triskele at its wider end. There is a small probable beast head terminal to its shortest curling arm which encloses an eye-like curl and pellet; the second branch is crooked below the first to r…
