Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead possible net sinker. A fragment of thin [1.5mm] cast lead sheet or foil folded or rolled to tubular form, now flattened; patinated. The lead sheet is thinner than usual for this artefact type. If not a net sinker, possibly a later line weight. Suggested date: possibly Early Medieval, 700-850 Length: 28mm, Width: 12.5mm, Thickness: 5.1mm, Weight: 9.71gms.

Lead spindle whorl. Cast cylindrical whorl with a central moulded aperture of diameter 11.2mm, either miscast or more probably part-melted, Walton Rogers form B. Eight wide radial cuts or grooves appear on one side of the whorl: this texture or decoration has recently been noted as a most unusual feature of another whorl reported recently from the immediate vicinity. The spindle hole size could admit an Anglo-Scandinavian date. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 1000-1100 Diameter: 27.6mm, Thickness: 9.4mm, Weight: 27.99gms

Lead possible net sinker. A weight made by rolling a sub-rectangular scrap of cast sheet lead, probably achieving a slightly overlapping seam though this is now disrupted, perhaps by removal of the object from the selvedge of a net or, given that it is lighter than many formal parallels, from a fishing line, as is kindly suggested by the finder. At nearby Flixborough, tubular lead net weights were dated to the Middle Saxon period. Suggested date: possibly Early Medieval, 700-850 Length: 21.3mm, Width: 10.8mm, Thickness (sheet): 1.8mm, Weight: 8.43gms

Lead probable spindle whorl. Cast cylindrical whorl with a central moulded aperture of diameter 9mm, Walton Rogers form B. Eight deep symmetrically distributed cuts radiate from the hole on the lower side [as cast – perhaps the upper side as used]. Though tidy enough to be deemed decoration, such features are actually rare on whorls of this simple form, and so many such cuts are perhaps an unparalleled feature. They might serve as tying notches, though a primary use as a whorl or a secondary use as a fishing line would usually require only one tying notch. Patinated. The spindle …

Lead net sinker. A long tube of cast sheet of thickness 2.1mm, neatly rolled round the selvedge of a net of diameter c.3mm with a butted seam, now bent, patinated and lightly squashed. Objects of this form and construction were reported from high status occupation at Middle Saxon Flixborough in a location beside the River Trent and may have been used to weight fishing or wildfowling nets. Suggested date: possibly Early Medieval, 700-850 Length: 58.8mm, Width: 13.9mm, Thickness (overall): 8.4mm, Weight: 41.24gms

Lead spindle whorl. Cast plano-convex whorl with a moulded central aperture of diameter 11.7mm, Walton Rogers form A1. Shrinkage lines around the hole on the flat side may indicate the object was cast in an open mould. A gouge beside the hole on the flat side might be a tying groove signalling the conversion of whorl to line weight. Patinated. The spindle hole size could admit an Anglo-Scandinavian date. Lead spindle whorl. Cast plano-convex whorl with a central moulded aperture of diameter 10mm, Walton Rogers form A1. There is a slight shrinkage line around the hole which may suggest the object was cast in an open mould. Lead weight. Cast sub-discoid flat-sided disc with suggestion of a rim on either side, patinated. Form and surface condition could suggest a Roman date. However, the mass equates almost exactly with three Viking Age units of 4.07gms, as are thought to have been used in areas under Danish Viking influence to govern transactions in silver bullion, and perhaps for a period thereafter where such practices had become established. A weight made in the [then] familiar style of a Roman weight but observing Viking weights and measures might point to Anglo-Saxon involvement in its fabrication. S…

Lead possible spindle whorl, as kindly suggested by the finder. Cast lump with a central moulded hole of diameter 9.5mm [long axis], possibly approaching a conical form, cf. Walton Rogers form A2. Severely distorted with deep scratches and lateral squashing; patinated. If indeed a whorl, and perhaps mis-cast at that, the spindle hole size may hint at an Anglo-Scandinavian date. Lead or lead alloy plate brooch fragment. Cast brooch with curvilinear beaded moulded decoration, to this reporter describing a triskele with opposed curls at the end of each of its arms around a central pellet, or perhaps as a running spiral motif. This appears to imitate the decoration of an Early Anglo-Saxon saucer brooch, which is not a common object class in the Humber region, though later brooches resembling this form are known (e.g. Weetch Type 6, dated to 900-1000; a similar brooch with central inset was reported from Lurk Lane, Beverley as a probably residual Viking Age find b…

Lead alloy and iron probable pin head. Cast sub-rectangular plate with five moulded rounded bosses forming a cross shape on its display side – the pattern recalls plate brooches of Weetch Type 9 dated to AD 800-1000 and this might even be one if use of an iron pin were admitted – and with the rusted relict of an iron shank on the back. As a pin, a drilled hole might point to derivation from a degraded species of linked pin. Abraded. Lead spindle whorl. Cast or mis-cast plano-convex whorl with an off-centre moulded aperture of diameter 12mm, Walton Rogers form A1. The hole is enlarged on the flat side, perhaps by the abrasive action of a line passed through the hole. Patinated overall. The spindle hole size could admit an Anglo-Scandinavian date while the damage at the hole might hint at conversion of a whorl to a line weight.
