Cut halfpenny of Edward the Confessor (1042-1066), kindly identified by the finder as the Expanding Cross type [Spink no. 1176 of 1050-1053]; the mass of this coin does not, however, appear to meet the criteria for this lightweight issue as defined by Spink. Obverse description: bust diademed and cuirassed left; initial cross pattee. Obverse inscription: +EDN’L. (---) Reverse description: cross pattee with central roundel. Silver coin. Cut halfpenny of Edward the Confessor (1042-1066), as identified by finder. Mossop (1970, ed. Veronica Smart, The Lincoln Mint c890-1279, Corbitt and Hunter Ltd, Newcastle upon Tyne, plate 75 nos. 6-31, plate 76 nos 1-14) illustrates a series by nine moneyers at Lincoln mint, which would be apt to this find spot. Nos 6, 9, 11-13, 17-20, and 25-27 supply apt obverse matches with regard to detail of the helmet. Obverse description: Helmeted bust right, draped, (sceptre right).
