Object type: SOCKETED AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Wrexham
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of a cast late Bronze Age copper alloy socketed axehead, dating to c.900-700 BC. The fragment consists of the axehead's cutting edge only, the rest of the object is missing. The cutting edge is worn and an abraded break reveals a shallow portion of the socket that is c.6mm deep. The axehead fragment is sub-trapezoidal in plan. The broken edge of the axehead runs transversely across its body giving an irregular, but mostly flat, edge. In cross section the body is sub-rectangular, as revealed by the break, while the blade is vesica (a pointed oval) shaped. …

A fragment of a blade – possibly a rapier dating to the mid to late bronze age (c.BC 1500-700). The blade is sub-rectangular in plan and lozenge shaped in section. The blade is narrow when viewed in plan and the edges are slightly concave, in section it shows both faces are convex and narrow at the edges to make the sharp edge of the blade. The object has a light green patina. Dimensions: Length 20.5mm, Width 27.7mm, Thickness 4.8mm, Weight 13.04g. A complete flint barbed and tanged arrowhead dating to the early Bronze Age or Beaker Period (c. 2400-1500 BC).  This arrowhead has been knapped from a light grey-white piece of flint and there is no cortex remaining. It is broadly sub-triangular in plan with sharp point and is lentoid in cross section. It is broadly symmetrical in shape, with two notches chipped into the base of the flint to separate the barbs and the tang, both barbs are still intact. A complete Bronze Age copper-alloy, unlooped palstave. Probably dates to 1700 to 1300BC, when similar geometries were prevalent (BM Occcasional Paper 102 - Taunton, Acton, Arreton). The blade of the palstave is sub-trapezoidal in plan with straight sides and flared blade tips. The blade edge is abraded, and blunt. There is a deep stop on both faces of the septum with flanges running down each side of the septum. The butt has broken ends, and would probably have originally run to more of a point. The surfaces of the chisel have either dark brown patina or lighter …

The opposite edge is wider and has a blunted edge. The upper and lower surface of the fragment has an incomplete matte mid green patina. Due to the object bing fragmentary, it is difficult to give a precise date. The fragment measures 33.8mm in length, 29.1mm in width and 7.7mm thickness and weigh…
