Object type: LITHIC IMPLEMENT
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Late Neolithic to late Bronze Age black flint tool from a secondary flake. On first appearence it looks a waste flake from secondary working of a core. Closer investigation reveals further working and retouch producing two pronounced notches on the concave edge and two less definate ones on the convex edge. The fineness of the original flake suggests a late Neolithic to early Bronze Age date, but the poor execution of the finished tool is more suggestive of a late Bronze Age date of manufacture. It is probably a late Bronze Age notched scraper or blade manufactured from a late Neolith…

Object type: RETOUCHED FLAKE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Cumbria
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Late Neolithic to Mid Bronze Age flint scraper on debitage. The pink grey tertiary flake has been retouched (short, scaled, abrupt to semi-abrupt) into an end scraper at the distal end. There is also retouch (short, scaled, abrupt) that forms a notch on the distal half of one of the mesal edges. The other edges have been blunted with crushing and retouch, but probably to make the tool more comfortable to hold than for any utilitarian purpose. Dates from c2700 to c1000 BC. The length is 57mm, width 32mm, thickness 15mm, and the weight is 21.4g.

A reddish flint 'pot lid' with cortex. Possibly modified to perform as a scraper by flaking from the ventral side along the top edge (as it appears in the image). A pale cream to white flint 'pot lid' with cortex. Possibly modified to perform as a scraper by flaking along the bottom edge (as it appears in the image). There has also been an attempt to flatten the natural bulge (produced when the pot lid fracture occurred) on the dorsal side. Possibly Bronze Age (c2100 to c800 BC) but impossible to date accurately. Probably a patinated white flint, with a black core, multi tool. Possibly a natural 'pot lid' modified to perform as a scraper and/or fletcher. It has a number of flakes removed from the ventral face. The obvious large removal would have served well as a bark peeler or similar for manufacturing arrows. Possibly Bronze Age (c2100 to c800 BC) but impossible to date accurately. See also LANCUM-04DF03 & LANCUM-052650. The length is 31mm, width 24mm, thickness 7mm, and the weight is 4.07g.

A nearly triangular iron stained white flint 'pot lid' with cortex. Modified to perform as a scraper by flaking along two edges. Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Early Bronze Age copper alloy (slightly flanged) flat axehead. The two largest faces are covered in length-wise elongated scalloping, probably working marks from the cast. The blade facet is c11mm on one side and c3mm on the other. There is no visible evidence (eg. micro scratches) of sharpening on the blade. There is minimal pitting and corrosion on the surface and what there is seems to be the result of the use of poor quality ore or alloy. The lack of wear may well indicate a ritual deposition or a particularly vexing accidental loss, most likely the former. The axehead quite clos…

Two robust pieces of 'Marles Wood' black chert debitage. There exists the possibility that they may be rough outs for tools. Probably Bronze Age, but they could be anytime from the early Mesolithic to the late Bronze Age. Bronze Age black chert tool, banded with limestone. Probably a heavy duty borer or similar as the 'pointy end' is high quality black chert. It may possibly be a core but its hard to envisage why the knapper be striking flakes from the limestone apart from doing it to produce a shape. Probably Bronze Age due to comparitive crudeness of knapping, but could be anytime from the early Mesolithic to the late Bronze Age. Dating between c8300 and c800 BC, most likely c1500 to c800 BC. The length is 40mm, width 40mm, thickness 30mm, and the weight is 56.8g.

Probably an early Bronze Age anvil stone dating to between c2100 and c1500 BC.. It reminiscent of the Early Bronze Age anvil stones from a smiths grave at Lunteren in the Netherlands; see http://1501bc.com/page/rijks_museum_oudheden/0214038.JPG. It is incredibly heavy for its size (too heavy for the finds scales) and shows evidence of continual impacts that appear deliberately placed. It is as likely that the anvil was used in the production of gold items, as well as copper alloy objects. The iron staining on the face of the stone is probably due to a close encounter with a plough at …

Mid to late Bronze Age mottled mid to late grey chert burin, possibly also used as a chisel. It is sub square in section and knapped in the crude fashion diagnostic of the later Bronze Age The knapping toward the proximal is more controlled than that of end of the Bronze Age and the beginning of the Iron Age. With the exception of the proximal end, where cortex remains, there are removals to the entire surface. The knapping toward the proximal narrows and shapes the section in a manner that suggests it was originally mounted on the end of a piece of wood or antler. Dating to between c…

A small cast copper-alloy socketed side-looped spearhead of Acton Park 2, Greenwell and Brewis' Class IV, probably dating from the early Middle Bronze Age, c. 1600-1400BC. The spearhead is complete, the blade and socket undamaged with a rough chocolate-brown patina showing hardly any sign of decay. The find has not been cleaned and there are still patches of soil/dirt adhering to the surface and inside the socket. The spearhead is small and stumpy, with two flattened side loops and a short, kite-shaped blade. The casting seams along the sides have been carefully removed and smoothed d…
