Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A hammer stone, ovate in plan, profile and section, 98 mm long, 75 mm wide and 48.5 mm in thickness or height, weighing 542.4 g. The hammer stone is made from a large beach pebble of hard, fine-textured dark grey stone with dark patches from organic staining. The ventral side of the pebble has been weathered to a pale grey colour where it has come into contact with plant material within its original deposit. The pebble is unmodified apart from an oval patch, approximately 50 mm long by 30 mm wide, at one end which has been flattened by multiple percussion events in its use as a hammer…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A fine-grained granite or aplite muller or rubbing stone dating from the Bronze Age. The muller is oval in plan and plano-convex in profile and section; 216 mm in length, 134 mm in width, 80 mm in thickness and approximately 2.9 kg in weight. The shape of the muller suggests that it was made from a beach cobble, one face of which has been ground to produce a smooth flat surface. The convex surface is scarred by two shallow, parallel scratches where it has been hit by an agricultural machine. The flattened surface displays evidence of use as a rubbing stone: the two ends are very sligh…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A greenstone whetstone, ovate in plan, profile and section with all the edges rounded, and the surfaces generally smooth as it was made from a beach pebble. The dorsal and ventral faces are worn smooth and flat through use as a whetstone to sharpen metalwork. Both ends are worn and pitted through repeated percussion where the tool was also used as a hammer or pestle. The narrower proximal end has had the removal of a single flake from one edge but it looks as if it might be damage through use as a hammer. There are also several areas of damage which have been caused by agricultural ma…

A double-sided stone muller with a circular cup mark on each face, so partially worked into a shaft-hole implement, dating from the Bronze Age. Ovate in plan, cylindrical in profile and in section, with two convex ends. 136 mm in length, 116 mm in width, 40 mm in thickness and 1151.35 g in weight. Both faces have been ground flat and the rounded edges have been pecked, making it ideal for use as a muller or rubbing stone. The original implement would have been an almost perfect oval in plan but one of the long edges has been damaged through the secondary use of the muller as a hammer-…

Fine-grained granite elvan muller or rubbing stone. The muller is oval in plan, with two rounded ends, and plano-convex in profile, with a convex upper face and a flat base. The flat, smooth base was used for rubbing, and the upper face convex so that it could be held and pushed across a base for grinding. The muller would have been used with a larger saddle quern to grind grain between the stones to make flour. The granite is fine grained and contains muscovite or mica, tourmaline and felspars. The soft felspars would work into hollows and the hard tourmaline would stand proud of the…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A fine-grained hammerstone or pestle, sub-rectangular in plan and section and ovate in profile. It is slightly wider at its distal end but fits comfortably in the hand however it is held and appears to have been used to exploit several of its surfaces for different purposes. The slightly flattened ventral face is pecked and uneven, suggesting use as a hammerstone; the distal end is smooth and the right side of the implement, when viewed from the ventral face, is flat and smooth, and it is likely that both of these surfaces have been used for grinding as a pestle. At the junction betwe…

Incomplete fine-grained sandstone or siltstone whetstone, rectangular in plan, profile and section. One of the wider faces is smooth and might have been used to sharpen blades, and the opposite face with an ovate recess, 42 mm long, 38 mm wide and 4 mm deep, was perhaps used as an anvil for crushing limpets, nuts or smaller foodstuffs. The finder has also found references to prehistoric stones with similar indentations that have been used as anvils for knapping flint from the Iberian peninsula. There are deep grooves on the smooth face that have been caused by later damage, possibly f…
