Object type: WINGED AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete late Bronze Age copper-alloy end-winged axe. Sub-rectangular in plan with butt, side loop folded wings and crescentic cutting edge. The butt end and most of the wings are missing. The damaged butt end is 25.34mm wide and 20.14mm thick. Casting seams are faintly visible along the centre of each side. The small surviving sections of the wings suggest that both are C-shaped in cross-section with their ends turned inwards. The lower face and blade flare outwards before reaching a narrow crescentic cutting edge which is very abraded. The blade is 37.95mm wide an…

Workflow stage: Published
A sherd from the body of an early Bronze Age vessel, dating to the period c.2350-c.1200 BC. Hard, coarse fabric containing plentiful poorly sorted quartz pieces (<2mm). The outer surface and core are an oxidised orange-red colour while the inner surface is a lighter grey. The outer surface is decorated with bands of three and two parallel lines of small square indentations. The fragment is too small to provide an indication of the original size and form of the vessel.

A fragment of a copper-alloy object, probably a dirk, rapier or spearhead of Bronze Age date. The object is an elongated, sub-rectangular shape with breaks along both sides and end. It is oval in cross-section with a slight raised ridge running along the centre of each face. The surface of the metal is heavily corroded and the breaks are well worn.

Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A fragment of a copper-alloy blade of uncertain type of probable Bronze Age date. It is an elongated trapezoidal shape, tapering slightly towards one end and is oval in cross-section. There is no defined mid-rib. The breaks at either end are well worn and the surfaces are pitted with corrosion.
In its current condition its original form is impossible to determine, but the form and patina suggest a Bronze Age date. It may be the outer tip of a larger object like a dirk, rapier or sword or perhaps a smaller object like a dagger or knife.

A fragment of a copper alloy late Bronze Age socketed axe or similar object. A small sub-rectangular fragment of a socket end, semi-circular in cross-section. Part of the out-turned rim of the socket survives, but there are breaks around the remaining edges. There is a small circular hole through the centre, which may suggest that the object is actually much later in date and not an axe.

Object type: TORC
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A fragment from a Bronze Age copper-alloy spiral twisted torc. The fragment is formed from a sub-square cross-sectioned bar that has been twisted into a spiral along its length. It is bent into a slight arc and there is a clean, cut break across each end. It survives in fairly good condition with patches of corrosion in places on the surface and no obvious signs of wear.
This spiral-twisted style of torc is a feature of the late middle Bronze Age 'ornament horizon', which is now placed in the Taunton and Penard metalwork phases c. 1400-1150 cal BC, with a partic…

Object type: THUMB NAIL SCRAPER
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Flint thumb nail scraper, made from a secondary flake, of probable Early Bronze Age date. Diffuse ripples and a wide butt suggest that a large, soft hammer was probably used. The majority of the dorsal face is covered with brown, chalky, cortex. The distal end shows semi-abrupt, long, parallel retouch. This retouch continues along the left edge, becoming shorter and abrupt. The flint is dark grey-brown in colour, with milky, blotched patination. Object type: SWORD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A fragment of a middle Bronze Age (Taunton/Penard Phase) dirk or rapier in two pieces. Only the inner part of the blade and a section of the butt survive. The blade has a low, rounded, slightly angular mid-section, curving outwards gently into slightly concave edges with no pronounced ridge. This forms a rounded lozenge shape in cross-section. The shoulders are damaged and the original form of the butt is unclear. The object is highly corroded with damage and pitting on both faces and around the edges, but the remains of a dark brown patina can be seen on both faces.

A fragment of a middle Bronze Age dirk or rapier. Only the upper part of the blade and the lower part of the butt survive. The blade has a slightly rounded mid-section, curving outwards gently into flattened edges with no pronounced ridge, forming a rounded lozenge shape in cross-section. The shoulders are damaged and the original form of the butt is unclear, but the edges of two circular holes for attaching the hilt can be seen in the break.
