Record ID: SOM-9D6B96
Object type: THUMB NAIL SCRAPER
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Flint thumb nail scraper, made from a secondary flake, of probable Early Bronze Age date. Diffuse ripples and a wide butt suggest that a large, soft hammer was probably used. The majority of the dorsal face is covered with brown, chalky, cortex. The distal end shows semi-abrupt, long, parallel retouch. This retouch continues along the left edge, becoming shorter and abrupt. The flint is dark grey-brown in colour, with milky, blotched patination. Length: 25.55mm, Width: 23.67mm, Thickness: 7.21mm Weight: 4.67g

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint thumbnail scraper, made from a retouched tertiary waste flake. The ventral face is very slightly convex and the bulb of purcussion appears to have been removed by a recent break. The dorsal face has three flaking scars, surrounded on three edges by semi-abrupt to abrupt retouch. The distal end has a slightly rolled edge resulting from later damage probably through ploughing or similar action. There is a large flake missing at the proximal end, which appears to have occured naturally following deposition. The flint is green-grey-whitish in colour, with a milky patina which has o…

Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A small flint thumbnail scraper, probably of early Bronze Age date. A secondary flake has been used; cortex still covers around 50% of the dorsal face. Crude and sporadic sub-parallel, long, semi-abrupt retouch extends from the proximal end of the left edge of the dorsal face, around the curved distal end, to around half way down the right edge. The butt is fairly small. The bulb appears to be fairly diffuse, but the majority has been reoved via a small flake. The flint is dark brown with a shiny patina. A complete flint scraper of probable Bronze Age date. It is roughly rectangular in shape with a curved distal end. It has very crude sub-parallel, abrupt, long retouch around the distal end and extending down both sides. There is thick white patination on both faces with some orange staining around the ridges, which the retouch has removed suggest reuse of an older, already patinated flake. The butt is narrow and the bulb of percussion prominant. The flint is mid-grey in colour. Length: 49.81mm, width: 37.97mm, thickness: 13.80mm, weight: 36.30g

Broad period: BRONZE AGE

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A possible flint 'barbed and tanged' arrowhead of early Bronze Age date. The object is crude and only approximates the standard barbed and tanged form so may be a practice piece. It has a prominent bulb of percussion that has been partially removed via a long flake to the left side. A similar flake has been removed from the other side on the dorsal face, together creating the tang. A long, thin flake has been removed from either side of the dorsal face creating a point. The end has been shaped via semi-abrupt, long, sub-parallel retouch. A few further flakes have been removed from the…

Flint thumbnail scraper, created from a secondary flake, probably dating to the Neolithic or early Bronze Age. The ventral face is slightly convex in shape, becoming concave at the edge, with a diffuse bulb of percussion and wide striking platform. The dorsal face has one large flaking scar and a smaller one towards the proximal end, still covered in cortex. Short, scaled, semi-abrupt to abrupt retouch can be seen around the edge of the wide, rounded proximal end, extending along the right edge, where is becomes more invasive. The flint is grey-brown in colour with a shiny patina. …

A complete flint early to mid-Bronze Age barbed and tanged arrowhead. It is triangular in shape with two notches in the base creating barbs and a slightly longer rectangular tang between them. Each side curves inwards very slightly. Bifacially worked with covering, sub-parallel and scaled, low angle retouch. The flint is a translucent grey-bown colour. Barbed and tanged arrowheads are characteristic of the Neolithic/early Bronze Age transition to middle Bronze Age period, c.2400-1000 BC. Small, incomplete flint tanged arrowhead of early Bronze Age date. Semi-abrupt to low-angle, covering retouch can be seen on both faces. Both sides of the butt end curve inwards (one side more strongly than the other), creating a central 'tang'. The tip of the arrowhead is missing. There is a small amount of chipping and cracking in places, which appears to have occured following deposition. The flint is mid brown-grey in colour with a shiny patina.
