Description: A fragment of a late Bronze Age socketed axe. Only the blade end and the inner part of the socket survives. The fragment is rectangular in cross-section, tapering towards the blade. The blade edge curves outwards and is damaged in places with a notch to one side. Each side of the fragment flares outwards towards the blade and gently inwards towards the break. A slight casting seam can be seen running longitudinally along the centre of one side, but this has largely worn away on the other side. The break has a rounded, rectangular depression in the centre, which is all that…

Object type: SOCKETED AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of a late Bronze Age socketed axe. Only the blade end survives. The blade curves gently outwards and there are parallel scratch marks running inwards on both faces, probably as a result of use. The sides curve inwards slightly and expand towards the break with a casting seam running along the centre of each. The break across the inner end is irregular and well worn with a section pressed inwards from one side covering the central hole. The break reveals that the axe is thicker to one face than the other. The surface of the metal is corroded in places, but a sh…

Description:  A complete Bronze Age gold item of jewellery dating to circa 2,300-800 BC. Now flattened and squashed, the piece is comprised of a cylindrical piece of sheet metal folded in on itself multiple times. The join is overlapping rather than soldered. The external face of the object is decorated with incised horizontal grooves running around the circumference. They cover the entire length of the piece. Length: 15.7mm; Width: 5.6mm; Thickness: 2.4mm; Weight: 0.60g. Discussion: The piece was likely used as an item of jewellery most likely a bead. It is similar to ot…

Object type: SWORD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of a middle Bronze Age (Taunton/Penard Phase) dirk or rapier in two pieces. Only the inner part of the blade and a section of the butt survive. The blade has a low, rounded, slightly angular mid-section, curving outwards gently into slightly concave edges with no pronounced ridge. This forms a rounded lozenge shape in cross-section. The shoulders are damaged and the original form of the butt is unclear. The object is highly corroded with damage and pitting on both faces and around the edges, but the remains of a dark brown patina can be seen on both faces. Th…

Object type: SPEARHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete copper-alloy middle Bronze Age side looped spearhead. The blade is c.32mm in length and 31.80mm maximum width. Its original shape is unclear as the majority of the outer part is missing. The mid-rib is lozenge-shaped in cross-section meeting the socket at its inner end. The blade is narrow with a rounded lower end. The surviving inner sections of the blade wing are flattened with much of the outer bevels missing. The socket is circular in cross-section and its outer end is missing. There is a small integrally moulded lozenge-shaped loop plate to either…

Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of a copper-alloy blade of uncertain type of probable Bronze Age date. It is an elongated trapezoidal shape, tapering slightly towards one end and is oval in cross-section. There is no defined mid-rib. The breaks at either end are well worn and the surfaces are pitted with corrosion. In its current condition its original form is impossible to determine, but the form and patina suggest a Bronze Age date. It may be the outer tip of a larger object like a dirk, rapier or sword or perhaps a smaller object like a dagger or knife.  Length: 35.88mm, width: 14.34mm, thic…

An incomplete copper-alloy middle Bronze Age side looped spearhead. The blade is c.66mm in length and 21.47mm maximum width. It is 'flame'-shaped, narrow, tapering towards the outer tip, with slightly concave sides and has a narrow central mid-rib that becomes lower towards the outer end in profile. The outer edges of the blade are largely missing. The socket is circular in cross-section and its outer end is missing. There are small integrally moulded side loops, the outer part of one of which is missing. The surface of the metal is heavily corroded.  This …

A fragment of a copper-alloy middle Bronze Age socketed side-looped spearhead. Only part of the socket and the inner section of the blade survives. The socket is a hollow tubular shape, expanding slightly towards its outer end and is lozenge-shaped in cross-section. Much of its outer end and a section to one side are missing. A tiny fragment of a side loop can be seen to one side just above the break at the outer end. The small surviving section of the blade is lozenge-shaped in cross-section with a prominent mid-rib and flattened blade to either side. The…

Object type: WINGED AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete late Bronze Age copper-alloy end-winged axe. Sub-rectangular in plan with butt, side loop folded wings and crescentic cutting edge. The butt end and most of the wings are missing. The damaged butt end is 25.34mm wide and 20.14mm thick. Casting seams are faintly visible along the centre of each side. The small surviving sections of the wings suggest that both are C-shaped in cross-section with their ends turned inwards. The lower face and blade flare outwards before reaching a narrow crescentic cutting edge which is very abraded. The blade is 37.95mm wide an…

Object type: FLANGED AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete copper-alloy early Bronze Age flanged axe. It has strongly concave sides with a flaring, outwards curving blade, which is 46.98mm wide. A low flange runs down either side, 12.27mm high, disappearing towards either end. The butt is 18.10mm wide and 3.30mm thick and is squared. The surface of the metal is heavily corroded and the breaks are well worn. This example probably belongs to the Willerby or Arreton metalworking phases, which equates to Needham's (2017, fig.16) Period 3 or Period 4 - c.1900 BC -c.1500 BC. Length: 80.84mm, width …
