Object type: TORC
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment from a Bronze Age copper-alloy spiral twisted torc. The fragment is formed from a sub-square cross-sectioned bar that has been twisted into a spiral along its length. It is bent into a slight arc and there is a clean, cut break across each end. It survives in fairly good condition with patches of corrosion in places on the surface and no obvious signs of wear. This spiral-twisted style of torc is a feature of the late middle Bronze Age 'ornament horizon', which is now placed in the Taunton and Penard metalwork phases c. 1400-1150 cal BC, with a partic…

Object type: RAZOR
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of a probable middle to late Bronze Age copper-alloy, probably double-edged, leaf-shaped razor. Only a section of the tang end survives. This has a pointed-oval cross-section and a straight, abrupt break across its inner end. Each side curves outwards gently and the remains of a small, flattened, rectangular tang projects from the centre of the outer end. Both edges appear to have been sharpened to form blades, but are heavily damaged and corroded, obscuring this to some degree. Uncertain class due to its fragmentary condition, but see PAS record&nb…

Object type: SOCKETED AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of a late Bronze Age socketed axe. Only the blade end survives. The blade curves gently outwards and there are parallel scratch marks running inwards on both faces, probably as a result of use. The sides curve inwards slightly and expand towards the break with a casting seam running along the centre of each. The break across the inner end is irregular and well worn with a section pressed inwards from one side covering the central hole. The break reveals that the axe is thicker to one face than the other. The surface of the metal is corroded in places, but a sh…

Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of a copper-alloy blade of uncertain type of probable Bronze Age date. It is an elongated trapezoidal shape, tapering slightly towards one end and is oval in cross-section. There is no defined mid-rib. The breaks at either end are well worn and the surfaces are pitted with corrosion. In its current condition its original form is impossible to determine, but the form and patina suggest a Bronze Age date. It may be the outer tip of a larger object like a dirk, rapier or sword or perhaps a smaller object like a dagger or knife.  Length: 35.88mm, width: 14.34mm, thic…

Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of a copper-alloy possible Bronze Age axe. It is trapezoidal in shape, rectangular in cross-section and wedge-shaped in profile - tapering towards one end, which remains relatively sharp. There is a rough break across the opposite end and also probably along one side which is straighter than the other, perhaps indicating a deliberate cut. The surface is heavily corroded and these breaks are very well worn. Because of the damage and corrosion it is uncertain whether this is definitely a Bronze Age axe and if so what type of axe this may be. It should be noted, however, …

Object type: BARBED AND TANGED ARROWHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete flint early to mid-Bronze Age barbed and tanged arrowhead. It is triangular in shape with two notches in the base creating barbs and a slightly longer rectangular tang between them. Each side curves inwards very slightly. Bifacially worked with covering, sub-parallel and scaled, low angle retouch. The flint is a translucent grey-bown colour. Barbed and tanged arrowheads are characteristic of the Neolithic/early Bronze Age transition to middle Bronze Age period, c.2400-1000 BC. Length: 30.77mm, width: 21.78mm, thickness: 6.59mm, weight: 2.56g

Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of a copper alloy late Bronze Age socketed axe or similar object. A small sub-rectangular fragment of a socket end, semi-circular in cross-section. Part of the out-turned rim of the socket survives, but there are breaks around the remaining edges. There is a small circular hole through the centre, which may suggest that the object is actually much later in date and not an axe.  Length: 30.8mm, width: 23.0mm, thickness: 4.8mm, weight: 10.42g

Object type: FLAT AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete Bronze Age developed narrow butted flat axe or palstave. The butt end is missing. The remaining section is triangular in shape, flaring very slightly at the blade end. It is rectangular in cross-section, becoming thicker towards the central break. The blade itself curves outwards gently and is bevelled. It is highly corroded with very worn edges and a pitted shiny dark brown patina on both faces. There are many parallel scratch marks on both faces. Length: 69.57mm, width at blade: 60.25mm, width at butt: 32.72, thickness: 10.85mm, weight: 180.64g

Object type: SPEARHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of a copper alloy Mid - Late Bronze Age spearhead. The fragment has lost all its diagnostic features and so the classification cannot be further refined. The fragment comprises a section of the upper part of the spear blade, including the lozenge sectioned central mid-rib and the blade to either side which tapers strongly towards the tip. The lower part of the spearhead including all of the socket is missing. The surface is pitted with corrosion, but a shiny green patina remains in a few places. The mid-rib is high and this is more common on spearhead of Middle Bronze …
