An incomplete cast copper-alloy socketed axe of late Bronze Age date. Only a small fragment of the socket end survives. This is roughly sub-rectangular in plan with breaks around three sides and part of the outer edge of the socket surviving on the fourth edge. At the socket end the exterior has a thickened rim beneath which is a prominent transverse ridge. There is also a longitudinal casting seam running along the centre of the outer side. The surface of the metal is heavily corroded and the breaks are well worn. Without further diagnostic details only a gen…

A fragment of a copper-alloy late Bronze Age socketed axehead. Only the blade end and a small amount of the socket survive. The blade curves gently outwards while its sides curve inwards slightly towards the butt end. The break across the inner end is irregular and well worn. A rectangular indentation in the centre of the break represents all that is left of the inner part of the original socket. The surface of the metal is corroded in places. Only a broad late Bronze Age date can be suggested due to the lack of diagnostic features. Length: 39.33mm, width: 39.56mm, thi…

A fragment of a late Bronze Age socketed axe. Only the blade end survives. The blade curves gently outwards and there are parallel scratch marks running inwards on both faces, probably as a result of use. The sides curve inwards slightly and expand towards the break with a casting seam running along the centre of each. The break across the inner end is irregular and well worn with a section pressed inwards from one side covering the central hole. The break reveals that the axe is thicker to one face than the other. The surface of the metal is corroded in places, but a sh…

A fragment of a copper alloy late Bronze Age socketed axe. The fragment comes from the outer rim of the socket. Part of a straight side, curving very slightly at one edge. The outer face is decorated with a raised transverse ridge c.12.5mm behind the edge of the socket. The edge of a longitudinal casting seam can be seen behind the break to one side. The surface of the metal is corroded and the breaks are well worn. The socketed form of the axe suggests a late Bronze Age date c.1150-c.800 BC. Without further diagnostic features it is difficult to assign the fragment to a specific…

A fragment of a late Bronze Age socketed axehead. Only one corner of the the blade end of the axe survives. Behind the blade the small surviving section of the side curves inwards with a casting seam running longitudinally along the centre. The surviving inner part of the socket is sub-rectangular in shape. Both surfaces have patches of corrosion and there is damage along the cutting edge of the blade. The breaks are all well worn. The socketed form of the axe suggests a late Bronze Age date c.1150-800 BC. Without further diagnostic features it is difficult to assign the fragment…

A fragment of a copper alloy mid to late Bronze Age (and into the early Iron Age) socketed axe. Only a small section of the socketed end survives survive. This is curved in profile with a raised rounded rim along the outer face of the socket end. The breaks are well worn. Both faces have the remains of a dark brown shiny patina in places, but this has worn away on the raised sections. Socketed axes were in use during the mid to late Bronze Age, from c.1300-700 BC. A fragment of a copper alloy Bronze Age socketed axehead. Only a small fragment of the axe socket survives. There is a raised rim c.12mm wide around the outer face of the socket rim. What is left of the socket suggests that it was roughly rectangular in cross-section at the end. A small portion of one side of the axehead survives with a casting seam along its outer face. The surface of the metal is heavily corroded with a bright green patina and the breaks are all very worn. Socketed axes of this form were in use in Britain from c.1300-800 BC generally, but this probably belongs to…

A fragment of a late Bronze Age socketed axe dating to c.1000-800 BC.Only the blade end and part of the socket survives. The blade is expanded and strongly curved. The cutting edge is abraded and notched. Each side curves sharply inwards behind the blade before tapering more gently towards the butt. There are traces of a slight raised rib on the butt end of both sides. The surviving portion of the body is rectangular in cross-section with a hole in the centre, which is all that remains of the socket. All surfaces have a shiny green patina, which is missing in a few places. Traces of p…

Fragment of a copper alloy Bronze Age socketed axe. The object is very worn and pitted with smoothed edges, though traces of a shiny greenish patina remain in places. The butt end is missing, all that remains is the blade. The cutting edge curves strongly outwards, and the sides of the blade slope inwards towards the break.
