Object type: SOCKETED AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Fragment of a middle or late Bronze Age socketed axe. Only the blade-end survives. The blade is curved and flares at both ends. The extent of the flared ends is not great, suggesting that it has been resharpened a number of times in antiquity. The body widens to the break, where it is rectangular in cross-section with a hollow centre. The edges of the break are slightly irregular, but in totality form a regular 'slice' across the axe. It is unclear whether the break is intentional or the result of damage. The surface of the axe has a dark-green patina, which is irregularly pitted thro…

Object type: FLAT AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Fragment of a possible early-middle Bronze Age flat axe. The 'blade' is crescentric but incomplete at one end. The cutting edge tapers acutely to the break. The blade tapers in plan but expands in cross-section to the 'shaft'. The shaft is broken; the break is rectangular in cross-section. The fragment is small for an axe and might be a votive model. See SWYOR-C63D62 for a broadly similar object.
The surface has a dark green-brown patina.
The blade measures 23mm high and 28mm in length. The shaft measures 5mm x 4mm at the break.

County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Published
A worn copper-alloy flat axe of the early to middle Bronze Age.
The blade end is crescentic in form, flaring to either side of the axe. The cutting edge is damaged in places but otherwise is in good condition. It has a flat, rectangular body that gradually tapers towards the butt end. Half way along the axe on either side is a shallow stop-ridge that seem to be early forms of the more prominant versions seen on palstaves.
The axe has patches of a brownish patina; the surface is smooth and in good condition.

Circumstances of Discovery
On 10th December 2011, while metal detecting on cultivated land in Ancaster, three gold rods fused together were found, the probable remains of a broken and melted down twisted wire torc of Middle Bronze Age date (c.1300-1150BC). One is made from twisted gold, one is a round, smooth rod with a pitted surface, the last is also round but the feint hint of of a twisted surface survives on one side. The hoard was found in the parish of Ancaster, Lincolnshire.
Description

A copper alloy socketed axehead dating from the Bronze Age. The axe has a subrectangular socket mouth with a moulded rim and single attachment loop. There appears to be dark, organic material within the socket mouth. A casting seam is visible above the fracture on the axe blade. The axe has fractured obliquely; the two pieces were found by a metal detectorist approximately 1m apart. There are small areas of pitting across the surface containing a powdery green corrosion product.
The blade is an unusual shape, having lateral indentations similar to another socketed axehead from the N…
