Object type: PENANNULAR RING

A complete Middle Bronze Age gold tripartite penannular ring dating to circa 1300-1150 BC. It is C-shaped in plan comprised of three circular-sectioned penannular rings soldered together. Each terminates in a straight and even break. Discussion: The form is consistent with other examples processed through the Treasure Act including 2021 T762 (Gard 2021) and 2012 T165 (Smith 2012) each of which is dated to the Middle Bronze Age. In those records, it is noted that gold tripartite penannular rings often lack secure archaeological contexts (Meeks, Craddock and Needham 2008: 13) while the …

Sheet gold strip or ribbon of Bronze Age date (2100 BC- 1150BC). The surface has been decorated with six parallel grooves running lengthwise. However, the original length and design of the artefact is obscured, as prior to deposition the item had been distorted and folded back on itself several times resulting in its current flattened form. Nevertheless, one thing that may point to its original function is the structure of the one remaining terminal. This is shown to be tapering with a fine hooked end and perhaps alludes to this artefact originally being used as a bracelet or s…

A complete and unfolded Copper Age basket ornament dated to 2500-2200BC. This item, possibly hair ornaments or ear rings, has been cut from thin gold sheet and would normally have been wrapped into a cylindrical 'basket' shape. This example has been flattened out and shows the full extent of the oval plate which is 38mm long and 16mm wide with semi-circular ends and long straight sides. The interior of the plate is decorated with two concentric lines that run around the outside, inside of this are four zones of about five to six vertical lines running perpendicular to the long edges. …

A gold unidentified object possibly of the Bronze Age period, dating to 1500 BC- 800 BC. This consists of a rectangular strip of metal which has been rolled into a cylinder with wrapped overlapping terminals, the item has been subsequently squish resulting in its current flattened form. The outer face of the cylinder is decorated with eight parallel grooves running lengthwise. Discussion: This multi-grooved strip of gold is possibly a bead of potential Bronze Age date. It is similar to several examples recorded through the Portable Antiquities Scheme and dated to the Late Bronze …

Two complete gold penannular rings dating from the Middle to Late Bronze Age (c. 1300 – 800 cal BC). The first ring is in the shape of an oval-sectioned loop (15.0mm wide by 14.0mm high) and has a circular cross-section frame that is the same diameter (2.8mm) along its whole length. Both terminals have a shallow rectangular shaped recess in the centre of their face. There is a thick scar that runs along the top edge of the penannular from the right-hand terminal to just beyond the midsection of the frame. The second ring is a similar form being an oval-sectioned loop (15.…

A gold loop of uncertain function made of square cross-sectioned rod that has been bent into a sub-circle shape, one side is slightly distorted and straight and the terminals are over-lapping. The rod is thickest at its centre and thinnest at the terminals. Dimensions: Weight: 8.44g; Diameter: 22mm by 22mm; Thickness: 5mm (max.) - 1mm (min.) Metal composition: Non-destructive X-ray fluorescence analysis of the ear-ring carried out by the British Museum's Department of Scientific Research indicated a surface composition of approximately 86-87 % gold, 11-12 % silver and at least …

The following is taken from the Treasure report written by Neil Wilkin (Curator of European Bronze Age collection) Descriptive catalogue Note on numbering, terminology and weight: The gold ornaments were recovered in three nested 'sets' and have been labelled with reference to set number followed by object number (i.e. A.1-2, B.1-4 & C.1-2). The goldwork has yet to be cleaned and the weights given are subject to change. As the ornaments were deposited in a 'nested' fashion, most are covered and obscured by others and set C has a central plug of soil. It was therefore not poss…

Middle Bronze Age circular gold bead that is biconical profile. The interior is hollow with the walls made of thin sheets (less than a millimetre thick at the aperture). The inner face slightly rough suggesting the bead may have been cast. The following discussion has been taken from record NMS-AEC678 written by Dr Andrew Rogerson (Norfolk Senior Historic Environment Officer (Finds)) and Mr Neil Wilkin (Bronze Age Curator British Museum) The gold bead is likely to date to the Middle Bronze Age (c.1500-1100 BC) based on several close comparanda. The three biconical gold beads from the…
