Object type: FLANGED AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Gloucestershire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper alloy short flanged palstave axe dating to the late Early to early Middle Bronze Age.  The axe has a wide curved blade that is bevel on both sides of the forward edge. The sides of the blade concave and narrow to the main rectangular body.  This is flanked by large flanges on both sides that project perpendicular to the frame of the axe, each flange is convex in profile running from the butt of the implement for two thirds of its length. Similar examples are illustrated by Schmidt and Burgess (1981: pl 54, nos 730-734) which are termed as short flanged axeheads. T…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A late Middle to early Late Bronze Age (1500 - 1100 BC) copper alloy dirk. The butt is oval in form with shoulders that curve inwards to the narrow blade. Two rivet holes to the bottom of either side would secure the hilt in place, both of which are now truncated with only the top of the hole remaining. The cross-section of the blade is oval with sides that gradually taper to the point. Post depositional corrosion has resulted pitting on the surface, but otherwise this item is in very good condition with only the tip of the blade and extremities of the rear missing. Dirks and rapie…

A complete Middle Bronze Age gold tripartite penannular ring dating to circa 1300-1150 BC. It is C-shaped in plan comprised of three circular-sectioned penannular rings soldered together. Each terminates in a straight and even break. Discussion: The form is consistent with other examples processed through the Treasure Act including 2021 T762 (Gard 2021) and 2012 T165 (Smith 2012) each of which is dated to the Middle Bronze Age. In those records, it is noted that gold tripartite penannular rings often lack secure archaeological contexts (Meeks, Craddock and Needham 2008: 13) while the …
