Object type: RIBBON
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A folded fragment of gold strip or ribbon, dating to the Bronze Age c. 2350-800 BC. The ribbon is rectangular in plan and made from a beaten sheet of gold. It has been folded or bent out of shape in several locations. One surface of the ribbon is decorated with thirteen regular, longitudinal, incised grooves, creating ridges. The exterior longitudinal edges are slightly thicker than the internal ridges, creating a border to the band. Both terminals appear to have been cut leaving a straight edge. The longitudinal edges have likely been smoothed, as they are rounder when compared w…

Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A slender copper alloy flat developed axehead or possibly a chisel, dating to the Early Bronze Age, c. 2000-1700 BC. The object is markedly petite, rectangular in shape, and an extremely flattened pointed oval in section, not bulbous enough to be described as lenticular. The object flares very slightly from the butt to the cutting edge, but this is extremely subtle and not characteristic of broad flared axeheads. There are slightly raised flanges present, but these are only present on one surface, and can only be felt rather than seen. There is a suggestion of a slight nick at t…

Object type: ARROWHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A roughly made chert arrowhead, likely unfinished, dating to the Bronze Age, c. 3300 - 1000 BC. The object is formed of a mid brown chert, which has areas of grey patinisation across the dorsal, and to a lesser extent the ventral, faces. It is triangular in plan and in section, with a distinct nub at the distal end which is reminiscent of a possible tang. There is an attempt at retouch on one of the cutting faces, but this is incomplete and suggests the object was discarded during manufacture. For a complete example in chert, see LEIC-FCF17B. Measurements: 29.1mm length, 23…

Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Two small fragments of a spearhead of possible Middle Bronze Age date. The fragments adhere to one another, although a small area remains missing between the two fragments comprising the cutting edge. A distinct mid-rib runs through the fragments, emphasising their flattened outer flanges which do not show signs of channelling. The cutting edge around the full circumference is worn and damaged. The butt is entirely missing and while the tip fragment appears smooth, there is very likely a further fragment missing comprising the sharp tip for entry to the prey or victim. The fragments to…

An incomplete, worn and damaged Late Bronze Age to Early Iron Age socketed axehead, dating to c. 800-700 BC. Part of one lateral surface survives in respectable condition while the other is badly damaged with only c. 25% of this surface surviving. Any possible collar is also missing, along with the entirety of the open end. The hollow socketed form is clearly visible due to the break. The cutting edge is also badly worn and appears distinctly rounded. The body of the axe is narrow and slender, and does not flare to the cutting edge. In profile, the axehead appears triangular and …

A fragment comprising approximately 50% of a barbed and tanged flint arrowhead dating to the Early Bronze Age, c. 2700-1600 BC. The point, the tang and one of the barbs are missing. One barb, the cutting edge of the point to near the apex and part of the distal end survive. It is formed of a tertiary flake of mid grey flint, with a distinctive circular patch of white patina in the centre of the arrowhead. Most barbed and tanged are made with the bulb of percussion orientated towards the point of the finished arrowhead, this is the thickest part where the area immediately …

A fragment of a copper alloy sword of Bronze Age date, c. 1600-800 BC. The fragment comprises part of the blade, and is sub-rectangular in shape, although it tapers to a narrowed break. It is lenticular in section, with a marked central rib giving it this profile. There are breaks at both terminals, and the sides of the blade are also jagged and damaged. The surface is largely a smooth dark brownish green, but areas of damage show the lighter green undersurface. Numerous similar fragments are recorded on the database, which include SF-F0C159 and NMGW-587A08. The size of th…

Found in April 2021 while metal detecting on cultivated land. The finder is to be highly commended for ceasing detecting after the discovery of the uppermost two axes, at which point he sought archaeological assistance. The FLO attended, accompanied by Michael Trevarthen who supervised the excavation of the findspot. There were then discovered a further fifteen axeheads arranged very deliberately, carefully placed one upon another. Their formation strongly suggested that they were originally placed in a soft yet firm container, possibly a basket. A full excavation report is to follow. …

A copper alloy flat axehead of Needham Class 4, dating to the Early Bronze Age period, c. 1900-1700 BC. The axehead is lenticular in profile, with slightly flattened edges, and a broadly flaring cutting edge. It is comparatively small with a markedly slender butt, which nonetheless thickens at the septum. This is possibly a proto-stop ridge, as there is a particular horizontal thickening in this area. Both faces show signs of pitting, with some circular areas a deeper green than the consistently dark green surface elsewhere. There is a shallow U-shaped depression in the cutting …

A fragment of an axehead, possibly a flat axehead, dating from the Early to Middle Bronze Age, c. 2200-1500 BC. The rectangular fragment comprises the blade of the axehead, which is fairly straight and flattened and does not flare broadly from the main body. The break occurred in antiquity, with the break appearing irregular and weathered in conjunction with the rest of the fragment. The surface is now a mid green in colour but with patches of darker brown where the surface patina has been damaged. The fragmentary condition makes firm identification difficult, but the cons…

A fragment of a small tanged copper alloy spearhead of Bronze Age date, within the Arreton metalworking assemblage, Needham Period 4, c. 1700 - c.1500 BC. The fragment is leaf shaped, with the original tip damaged and then worn to a rounded apperance. From the tip the head flares to its widest point before narrowing to the stub of a flattened tang which appears to have extended and may have been rectangular in shape. There is a markedly raised central midrib on both faces, and these extend along the full length of the surviving fragment. While initially reported as an arrowh…

A possibly incomplete copper alloy flat axehead of Migdale type dating to the Early Bronze Age, c. 2200-2000 BC. The axehead has a slightly truncated butt, which may be due to a break or simply its individual form. It remains fairly narrow and rectilinear in shape before flaring to the blade. It is rectangular in cross section, although the blade narrows to its original cutting surface. It appears undecorated but the surface is pitted and marked across the dark green shiny patina. The assemblage is made up of three palstaves of Middle Bronze Age date, c. 1400-1100 BC. All three are of South Western Type, and characteristic of the Taunton/Penarth phase. The three palstaves are all very similar to one another, with none having any side loops or clearly visible decoration, although any decoration may be obscured by encrustation. All three are now mid to pale green in colour, and somewhat encrusted, with all three examples showing signs of the onset of bronze disease, with a particularly notable powdery pale green patch on the central midrib of Palstave 3. It is sub-rectangular in plan, and tapers in width and thickness from its socket to a rounded cutting/gouging edge which is concave on one of its surfaces. It is broken at the socket end, and any possible collar is now missing. The edge of the break is uneven and slightly frayed. What survives of the socket appears circular in shape. Pearce (1983: 43) considers that socketed gouges 'appear to have begun in the Wilburton phase, and continued as part of the tool repertoire until the end of the Bronze A…

An incomplete cast copper alloy miniature socketed axehead dating to the late Bronze Age to early Iron Age, c. 850 BC to 400 BC. The object is rectangular in shape, parallel sided with the cutting edge, now damaged, originally flaring between the two horizontal sides. It is now wavy, with a marked rise and fall along the cutting edge. It is unclear whether this may have been deliberate, given the size of the object and its possible non-functional use, or whether this happened post deposition. The latter seems more likely as the wave is caused by one large and one smaller removal …
