Object type: SOCKETED AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy blade fragment from a socketed axe dating to the Late Bronze Age (c.1000-800BC).
The object comprises a blade fragment only from a socketed axe. The break along the edges would appear to indicate that the axe has broken, rather than being cut, prior to deposition. At the top of the fragment is the base of the wedge-shaped socket, sub-rectangular in form and measuring 34.57mm in length, 7.6mm wide and with a maximum depth of 17mm. The axe flares slightly towards the crescentic blade. The surface of the axe is pitted and corro…

County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
The terminal (or ‘horn’) from a lunula, dating to the Early Bronze Age (c.2400-2000BC).
Description: The spatulate terminal is broadly ‘spade’ shaped; the upper left side of the spade has been folded almost back upon itself, the upper right is also folded at a 90° angle, and the lower right edge is also slightly bent. At the base of the spade is a stem that tapers (to a diameter of 2.2mm) and rotates (relative to the remainder of the collar) before broadening to a maximum width of 10.5mm at the break. Both the upper and lower tips of the break are bent, giv…

Object type: PENANNULAR RING
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Description:
An incomplete gold penannular ring dating to the late Bronze Age (c.1000-800BC).
The ring has been manufactured from a sub-circular copper alloy bar over, which a thin sheet of gold has been applied and hammered flat, thus giving the appearance of being made of solid gold. It has been decorated with silver, or silver rich gold wire, which covers the ring in a continuous spiral giving a striped effect. The stripes are extremely thin and measure about 0.8mm in maximum width, whilst the gold sheet is approximately 0.25mm thick (measured at the damaged terminal). The gap b…

Object type: RIBBON
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: West Berkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Description: A folded fragment of a gold strip or ribbon dating to the Bronze Age c. 2200 - 800 BC.
The ribbon is a thin rectangular sheet of gold. One side is decorated with thirteen regular, longitudinal, incised grooves whilst the other side is plain. The long edges are slightly thicker, giving it the illusion of another two grooves. The ribbon is folded almost half-way down its length with the undecorated sides facing. One end of the strip is finished with slightly rounded corners, perhaps implying the original finished edge, while the other appears to have been cut.

Object type: DIRK
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Published
Cast copper alloy dirk dating from the Middle Bronze Age, c. 1500-1300BC. Related to dirks with ill- or poorly defined butts or possible damaged butts (because of rehafting) (Burgess and Gerloff 1981, nos. 217-266).
The dirk survives in good condition with an even olive green patina covering most of the surface. There are some patches of corrosion in the centres and towards the butt ends on both obverse and reverse and there is damage around the outside edges. The rivets are missing and there is considerable damage around the rivet holes. The olive patinated surface is smooth: the …

A complete cast copper-alloy socketed hammer, probably dating the late Bronze Age 'Ewart Park' phase (c.900-800 BC).
Whilst the hammer is sub-rectangular in cross-section, viewed in plan from above the hammer is rectangular, and the convex sides are sub-rectangular. The hammer is section waisted, expanding into a flared collar, with four concentric grooves (or three bands or 'ribs') encircling the base of the flared socket end. The socket mouth is sub-circular whilst the interior void appears to taper toward the hammer end. Casting lines running along the upper …
