Record ID: SF-3F9AD8
Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A knapped flint side scraper on a broken tertiary flake, scalar semi-abrupt directly applied retouch forming a rounded convex working edge. Most of the platform shattered away in old damage. Length down percussion axis: 29.05mm, 39.63mm maximum width, 9.23mm thick at its midpoint. Weight: 14.51g. The crude nature of this piece suggests Middle-Late Bronze Age manufacture, c. 1500-750 BC.

Object type: CORE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A knapped flint core of probable Bronze Age date, c. 2500-1500 BC. The core is sub-rectangular in plan, demonstrating removals from both faces and sides with little apparent care for flake direction and forethought of detachment. Heavily worked down (probably representing the reason for its discard), it is now patinated a yellowy grey colour with some iron staining visible on its surfaces. Preserved in relatively fresh condition, the core measures 71.43mm in length down its longest axis, c. 56.14mm wide at its widest point and 30.8mm thick at its midpoint. It weighs 159.6g.

Object type: BARBED AND TANGED ARROWHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete knapped flint barbed and tanged arrowhead of Green's 'Ballyclare' type, dating c. 2500-1500 BC. One barb, the tang and part of the tip are broken away, but otherwise it survives intact. Manufactured on a tertiary flake of fine-grained translucent blackish-brown flint, it is triangular in plan-tapering along its length to a sharp point. The surviving barb is squared off, though due to breakage the form of the tang cannot be ascertained. Covering bifacial pressure-flaked retouch has removed the entirety of the original flake surface on both sides of the object. Preserved i…

Object type: BARBED AND TANGED ARROWHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete knapped flint barbed and tanged arrowhead of Green's (1980) 'Sutton' type, dating c. 2500-1500 BC. One barb and the tip of the arrowhead are missing, but otherwise it is preserved in relatively good condition. Manufactured on a small piece of originally tan coloured flint that has now patinated a mottled blue/white, both faces of the arrowhead demonstrate highly invasive pressure-flaked removals that have removed almost all of the original flake surface. The tang is squared off at its base, the body triangular in plan with deep notches cut into its base, while the remain…

Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete struck flint tertiary flake of probable later Prehistoric date, c. 4000-1150 BC. Broadly sub-triangular in plan, it has been struck from a core of mottled light grey flint and demonstrating a small patch of creamy white cortex at its distal end, the flake demonstrates two arrises on its dorsal face, a sub-lenticular platform, and a neatly prominent bulb of percussion on its ventral face suggesting hard-hammer removal. Preserved in fresh condition, it measures 37.15mm in length, 23.94mm wide at its midpoint, and 5.07mm thick at its midpoint. It weighs 5.62g. Lithics out …

Object type: LITHIC IMPLEMENT
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Cambridgeshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete knapped flint lithic implement of probable later Neolithic or Bronze Age date, c. 3000-1150 BC. It is broadly oval or egg-shaped in plan, with a plano-convex profile. Knapped on a tertiary flake of mottled bluish grey flint with large yellowish inclusions, the dorsal face demonstrates an extremely prominent dorsal arrise, while the original ventral face is rather flattened by secondary working. The piece has been retouched extensively on both faces around the entire circumference of the object, with that on the ventral face being low-angle covering and having removed all th…

Object type: BORER
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete knapped flint borer of probable Bronze Age date, c. 2500-1150 BC. It has been manufactured on a hard-hammer detached triangular flake of brownish black flint demonstrating infrequent yellowish inclusions. There are two arrises on the dorsal face, while the platform is plain and demonstrates no preparation. The boring portion of the tool has been formed by continuous directly applied scalar retouch along the dorsal right edge, while the dorsal left edge is unmodified with the exception of some fairly recent edge damage. Preserved in relatively fresh condition, it measures 49…

Object type: KNIFE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete knapped flint fragment originating from a plano-convex knife of Early Bronze Age date, c. 2500-1500 BC. It is now preserved in fairly fresh condition with an even white and blue patina covering most of its surfaces, though the inner material (visible at its truncated end) seems to have been a dark blue colour originally. The fragment is sub-triangular in form (probably the form of the original knife itself) and plano-convex in section. Its ventral face is plain, though its dorsal surface (specifically the right dorsal edge) demonstrates directly applied invasive pressure…
