Object type: SOCKETED AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A virtually complete cast copper-alloy socketed axehead dating to the Late Bronze Age, c. 1000-800 BC. This example belongs to the Ewart Park metalworking phase and is of the 'Meldreth' type. The socket mouth is circular sectioned, flares outwards at its upper edge and is heavily lipped. Underneath the socket mouth itself is a less prominent secondary collar which more or less lines up with the upper part of the loop which projects from one side of the object. The main body of the axe is broadly rectangular-sectioned and facetted on its front and rear faces, expanding outwards along i…

This example falls into Burgess and Gerloff's group II, 'dirks with damaged or ill-formed blades modified for rehafting'. The dirk itself is missing the tip of its blade, but is otherwise preserved intact. Demonstrating a squared off thickened butt with two semi-circular notches (one on each face) cut into each side to facilitate hafting, The blade itself is lenticular in section with a broad, flattened midrib on each side. County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published
An incomplete cast copper-alloy socketed spearhead dating to the Middle Bronze Age, c. 1550-1250 BC. This example is of Davis' Group 6-'Developed side looped spearheads', probably belonging to the Acton Park or Taunton metalworking phases. The base of the socket is missing along with the edge of one blade wing, but otherwise the spearhead is preserved intact. The socket itself is circular sectioned and extends into the head of the spear for a short distance before becoming solid, retaining most of one socket-loop at its irregularly truncated end. The latter has a broadly lo…

Workflow stage: Published
A fragment originating from a large socketed and basal looped spearhead of later Middle Bronze Age date (c. 1400-1150 BC) belonging to Davis' group 8; 'elongated spearheads with incorporated basal loops' forms. This object can probably be assigned to the Taunton or Penard metalworking phases. Only the upper section of the spearhead survives, consisting the upper blade and point, probably representing less than a third of the original object. The lower portion of the body, side-loops and socket have been removed by means of a neat old truncation. The upper blade is triangula…

Object type: CHISEL
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published
A complete cast copper-alloy socketed chisel of Late Bronze Age date and probable Ewart Park metalworking phase attribution c. 900-750 BC. In form it is very similar in appearance to socketed axes, though the small size of this object heavily infers that function as a chisel is far more likely. The socket mouth is widened and circular in plan, tapering slightly to the midpoint of the object before expanding outwards again towards the flared working end of the object. Preserved in good condition with an even greyish-coloured metal and encrustations covering some portions of the object,…

The fragment represents a section across the midrib and blade wings (giving an overall lozengiform section) around two thirds of the way up the blade, truncated irregularly at its top and bottom edges as well as missing one side of its midrib in an old break. Preserved in somewhat poor condition, it survives to a maximum length of 17.68mm long, 21.35mm wide, and 8.27mm thick at the midrib. It weighs 5.31g.
