Object type: PALSTAVE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Incomplete cast, Middle Bronze Age, copper alloy, palstave, 1550-1150 BC. The axe has a curved flared blade that tapers towards the central stop ridge. The rear half of the palstave is subrectangular in shape, thought the very tip of the butt is missing. This rear half has U shaped concave flanks with traces of longitudinal ridges on the interior of the depression. The profile of the tool is diamond shaped, tapering from the stop ridge towards the butt and the blade.
The palstave is covered in a bright green patina and is heavily pitted with much of the original surface of the obje…

Object type: SOCKETED AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Essex
Workflow stage: Published
Incomplete copper alloy Late Bronze Age socketed axehead dating from c. 1000-800BC. The axehead is a South Eastern type and part of the Ewart Park metalworking assemblage. It has a round section socket and is undecorated except for a single moulded ridge around the socket apeture. There is a single integrally cast loop on the underside of the axehead and a casting seam that runs the length of the object from blade to socket on the upper side. The blade of the axe has been damaged and there are patches of corrosion across the surface. The axehead is triangular in plan, tapering to the …

Object type: PENANNULAR RING
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Published
Gold, Bronze age, penannular ring, 1150-750 BC. Possibly a cast solid gold ring though some examples have shown that they are gold coated copper alloy cores, such as NMS-183C7E. The ring is circular in section with flat opposed terminals. These rings are often erroneously referred to as 'ring money' though there is no evidence to suggest that they were used as currency. They are predominantly believed to have been used for personal adornment, such as earrings or nose rings, they have even been suggested as hair ornaments. A complete example can be found in HAMP-0F9AF6 and there are nu…

Object type: BRACELET
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete gold penannular bracelet of possible Bronze Age date 1500-900BC. The bracelet is formed of a single continuous thick wire that has been formed into loops at the terminals and doubled back on itself. The wire has been soldered along its length to join the two parallel wires together, though there is a gap where the solder has failed. The terminal loops are slightly flattened at their tip. There are some scratches and striation on the metal possibly due to cleaning or deposition damage rather than decorative or manufacturing processes.
The Bracelet would have had a relativ…

Description:
The find is of a group of copper alloy objects, including 3 axes (1 fragmentary and 2 largely complete) and 11 fragments of (probably) a single or multiple bracelet of the 'Sussex Loop' variety. All the artefacts are heavily corroded making detailed identification of type and use-wear analysis difficult in some cases.
1) Palstave axehead. A complete copper alloy palstave axe in a very corroded condition, making the surface impossible to examine for use wear marks. The axe has been cast in a two-part mould which has been misaligned, leading to a prominent ridge a…

This is a patination found on other examples such as HAMP-C18814 and SUSS-EA6735.

Object type: SOCKETED AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete, cast, copper alloy, Bronze Age socketed axehead,1100-900BC.
The axehead has been damaged and is missing the loop that would have been attached to the top side. The blade has been worn down and is quite corroded, giving it a straigter profile rather than the more usual crescent. The sides of the axehead are smooth and the socket is almost circular in cross section. There is a defeined casting seam along the top and bottom edges. The axe has a slight taper from the blade but flares outward again at the socket. There is no decoration around the socket mouth.
There is a sm…

A copper alloy, Bronze Age, palstave axe head, 1500-1000BC. The palstave comprises a broad, curved blade, fan shaped. It tapers back from the blade in an arc before levelling out to form the main body of the axe. There is a well defined mid rib running from the central transverse ridge to approx 30mm fro the blade, there are some other visible shorter ridges to either side, these are 20mm long. There are casting seams that run along the length of the top and the bottom of the object. The rear half of the object is defined by the socket of the axe, formed of two flanges upon the top an…

Object type: ARROWHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete flint arrowhead, probably Bronze Age in date, 2000-1000 BC. The arrow head is triangular in shape with a short tang along the broad edge. It has been formed from a small strucik flake and worked roughly to shape. The crudeness of the working suggests that the object is not complete and may be a rough out. The point of the arrowhead is quite thick compared to the tang, further suggesting that it is incomplete as no pressure flaking has taken place to thin the piece down.
