Object type: SOCKETED AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Part of the side and mouth of a Late Bronze Age socketed axe, probably of the Ewart park phase 950-750 BC. The fragment consists of the mouth moulding and adjacent part of one side with very worn breaks around all edges. At one point he edge has bent at 90 degrees to continue onto the front or back face before breaking. At the mouth is a thick triangular cross sectioned mouth moulding then a smaller, shallow D-shaped cross section moulding. Adjacent to this second moulding is a side loop, D-shaped in profile and pointed oval in cross section. Slight casting flashes remain along the s…

Object type: BORER
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Late Neolithic or Bronze Age flint awl or borer dating to 3300 to 1000 BC. The piece is made on a tertiary flake with a prominent bulb of percussion on the ventral face. The ripples and aris from previous removals on the dorsal face suggest the flint core was worked in at least two directions. Short semi-abrupt scalar retouch runs around the distal end and the left edge on the dorsal face. This left edge has been shaped by retouch into a distinct projecting slightly blunt ended point for boring holes in wood or hides. The piece is 21.9mm long, 24.1mm wide including the projecting poin…

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A flint scraper of probable Late Neolithic to Bronze Age date, c. AD 2700-1000. The scraper is worked from a secondary flake of opaque dark grey flint mottled with paler inclusions with a small amount of cortex remaining in the centre of the dorsal face. The flake widens from the proximal to the distal end. A striking platform with a bulb of percussion on the ventral face survives at the proximal end. Negative removal scars from hinged removals from the same platform are present on the dorsal face. The flake is worked unifacially, struck from the ventral face, with relatively long, ab…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Flint end scraper of probably Bronze Age date, 2200-1000 BC. The scraper is made on a thick secondary flake struck of a previous removal with a large area of cortex, inclusing an indent, remaining down on side. The flint is mottled mid-grey with lighter areas. The percussion waves on the platform and the scars from previous removals on the dorsal face suggest this was struck off a multi-platform core. There is a very large bulb of percussion on the ventral face. There is long, semi-parallel, semi abrupt retouch around the distal end on the dorsal face. There is damage and chipping, po…

Object type: SOCKETED AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A fragment of a late Bronze Age copper alloy socketed axe head, probably dating to 1100-800 BC and deliberately broken as part of ritual deposition. Only the cutting edge and adjacent section with the end of the socket survive. The cutting edge survives intact and runs in a shallow convex curve 39.7mm long, the blade tips flare outwards slightly but both the tips and blade edge are damaged and chipped. There are some possibly hammering marks on one face from sharpening.
The surviving part of the body appears to have had flat faces and convex sides, each side being triangular in cro…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Middle Bronze Age socketed axe head of the Taunton-Hademarschen type. The axe is relatively long and narrow compared to more common forms of socketed axe. the surface is badly corroded with thick concretions in some areas. The mouth of the socket is square, 19.6mm by 19.9mm internally, 27.7mm by 29.3mm externally. Adjacent to the mouth is a prominent moulding, up to 8.2mm wide and raised 1.4mm, reinforcing this socket.
The axe then tapers evenly becoming slightly narrower and consistantly thinner towards the widened blade, It is sub-rectangular in cross section with flat flaces and…

An incomplete cast copper alloy dagger dating from the Early Bronze Age, that is c.2150-c.1600BC. In plan it is broadly triangular with a straight sides tapering to a rounded and now abraded point. It is broadly flat in cross section, with a defined 'edge' which is seperated from the rest of the blade in places by a slight ridge and in other places just by the way it narrows more sharply to the outer edge. There is a shallow central rib on both faces running from the hilt towards the point, it is less visible on one face where it is covered by corrosion products (see below) but seems …

Description: A rolled fragment from a gold bracelet dating to the Middle Bronze Age c.1400-1100 cal BC.
The bracelet is made from a single rectangular gold sheet whose section is possibly slightly crescent shaped with a convex outer surface and concave inner surface. The long outer edges of the sheet are also slightly expanded. This has been tightly rolled down its length over 450 degrees. One terminal is at the centre of the spiral so that it is not possible to determine if it was broken or represents the original end however it clearly ends with a clean transverse edge. The opposite…

Object type: INGOT
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Kent
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Fragment of a copper-alloy ingot of probable late Bronze Age date, c. 1150 - 600BC.
Part of a plano-convex (bun) discoid ingot possibly suggesting the production in a bowl furnace rather than a mould. The upper is flat and the bottom is convex. Only a small section remains with a part of the original edge and very worn irregular breaks on the other sides. The section of the outside edge is too small to idenify the complete diameter. The ingot is pitted likely due to a mix of impurities in its matrix and the uneven natural material used to create the bowl in which it was cast.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Middle Bronze Age cast copper-alloy palstave (axehead) probably of unlooped type .The palstave is very corroded, with most of the butt lost and some of the blade and little of the original surface remaining. It does however appear to be unusually narrow, especially given its length. The septum is distictly thinner than the blade with parts of a stop ridge surviving on one face. The flanges appear to have been shallow on the butt, widening abruptly at the top ridge but that may be the result of wear and damage. The widest point is just beyond the stop ridge after which the sides th…

Middle Bronze Age cast copper-alloy palstave (axehead) probably of unlooped type .The palstave is very corroded, with some losses at its extremities and little of the original surface remaining. The septum is distictly thinner than the blade suggesting that this is a palstave rather than an earlier flanged axe (Schmidt and Burgess 1981, 115) but the stop ridge is mostly worn and corroded away. The flanges gradually widen from the butt to the stop with the widest point just beyond the stop ridge but there worn edges mean the shape is unclear. There is one possibly projection on on…

Thumbnail scraper on opaque mid brown flint becomeing paler towards one side and with medium sized pale mottles. The scraper is D shaped in plan with a curved distal end with long to invasive, parallel semi abrupt retouch along the entire edge from the ventral face. As the ends of this retouch has come over a thicker area towards the centre the force has gone out of it and they have interferred with each other to leave shalow scalar removals. Faint diffuse waves of percussion on the ventral face and one accidental removal which has taken of most of the shallow bulb. Part of the pl…

A copper alloy Middle Bronze Age palstave dating to the Acton- Penard phases (c. 1500 - 1100 BC). The palstave has a narrow butt and from the butt expands in both width and thickness into a high flange on either side flanking a central U-shaped septum. The septum exhibits a hollow on at least one face faces just above the stop ridge. This is caused by air trapped in the mould during the casting process. On one side of the palstave, adjacent to the stop ridge, is a broad U-shaped loop with tapering ends.
There is a tapering triangular indent with concave sides running from the sto…

A cast copper alloy 'moustache' shaped object of uncertain use but probably Middle Bronze Age date. The object consists of a pair of drooping ovoid elements with pointed outer tips, hence 'moustache' shaped. These ovoids are decorated with multiple grooves running down the body of each ovoid but stopping before the tip. This decoration is now very worn and the surface corroded so the grooves are only visible in a few places. In the centre of the two drooping ovoids is a plain band running around the waist of the object, this band is triangular in profle with a flat top and sides narro…
