Tip of copper-alloy socketed spearhead or arrowhead, with rounded midrib. The socket extends to about 35 mm from the tip. The blade edges are mostly damaged and worn, and the main break is patinated and fairly worn. There are recent (agricultural?) scrapes to the midrib on both faces. It is patinated medium green, with some paler green patches of corrosive products. One wing appears to be relatively complete; the side is only slightly convex, but there is a convex basal end. This side is only 66 mm long from the tip to where it joins the socket, although this must be an approx…

Object type: PALSTAVE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Small copper-alloy (probably bronze) palstave or 'ingot axe', with very low side flanges in a short septum (the septum is the area above the stop ridge and between the side flanges). The butt appears to be complete; although it is not at right angles to the sides, this is a common feature of palstaves. The palstave is extremely corroded; no original surfaces survive, apart from a small area at the angle between the septum and the stop ridge on either face, and the corroded surfaces are left extensively pocked. Some small circular voids on the blade are possible casting voids. Possi…

Four struck flints. 1. Single-platform core made from black gravel flint with cortex on most unworked surfaces. Length 41 mm, width 60 mm, thickness 23 mm. Later prehistoric. 2. Secondary flake with hinge fracture, made from mottled black and pale grey/white flint. Later prehistoric. 3. Secondary flake with use-wear or recent agricultural damage on the edge. Very obtuse striking angle. 4. Secondary flake, or possibly the result of agricultural equipment damage and hence a 'natural' flake. Very irregular. Black gravel flint with some cortex. The poor quality of this assembl…

Loop and part of socket from a large bronze socketed axe. It has a broad single mouth moulding above a large, broad loop which is blocked by a casting flaw. In places, espectially the outer face, the surface is chipped and pitted due to invasive corrosion. All edges are badly corroded and worn. Patinated dark green with variations of paler green due to corrosion. The axe, although incomplete, is larger than average and may be relatively late, i.e. transitional LBA 3/4 or LBA 4 (perhaps a Sompting-related form). The surviving length is 42 mm, the width across the face with the loop…

Copper-alloy sprue cap waster with remains of four casting runners and with two distinctly coloured remnants of fired clay between the runners. From the underside, a straight line clearly separates the differently coloured clays, with about two-thirds being of a rusty red-brown and dark brown, the other third being a pale grey-brown. A smaller area of this paler clay lies between the runners and the top of the sprue cap. The copper alloy is patinated a medium to dark green. It is impossible to be sure of the date, but the sprue cap itself is paralleled by numerous examples used for…

Copper-alloy rivet with two expanded domed heads. The cross-section is roughly circular and a minimum of 7 mm in diameter. It has about eleven irregular longitudinal facets, presumably resulting from manufacture; some of these faces bear longitudinal grooves, perhaps resulting from cuts shaving off part of the surface. From the side view, the domed heads are not parallel to one another but lie at about an 18-degree angle. Most of the rivet has a dark brown patina, but there is some surface loss and pale brown and green invasive corrosion on the domed heads. The size, form and cond…

Re-utilised fragment from an unfinished copper-alloy sword. The fragment consists of the hilt and blade junction, and has a rounded midrib. The hilt has two completely perforated rivet holes, one of which is broken across; the breaks here are corroded but relatively unworn. There are additionally two incompletely drilled rivet holes visible on both faces, more deeply drilled on one face than on the other. Both ends of the sword fragment have subsequently been blunted, smoothed and neatly rounded, to serve some secondary use. The sword would have been made in the Late Bronze Age an…

Small copper-alloy side-looped spearhead or arrowhead. Most of the blade is missing, with a corroded and slightly worn break just above the socket; in addition, quite a bit of one face of the socket is missing just below the base of the blade. The side loops are small, and there is a rounded midrib to the blade. Deep brown patina with areas of pale green corrosion where damage (possibly recent) has occurred. Surviving length 61 mm, estimated original length c. 83-108 mm. Surviving width (probably only slightly less than the original width) 16 mm, external diameter at socket 15 mm, weig…

Copper-alloy tracer-awl, with one pointed end and one chisel end. One corner of the chisel end is missing, but otherwise the awl is complete. The shaft of the pointed half of the tool is smoothly curved, which has caused no stress to the metal. Both ends narrow from a roughly square-sectioned centre (5 x 6 mm); the chisel-ended half is then sub-rectangular in section (the corners are not at right angles, so forming a slight parallelogram) and the point-ended half is a slightly facetted round section. The awl is patinated a dark green-brown with some small paler green areas where sl…

Short fragment of copper-alloy blade, probably from near the tip end of a sword. The cross-section is lentoid with slightly concave sharpening bevels near the edge. The main breaks are patinated and slightly worn, so appear to be ancient. The patina is a medium green/brown with patches of paler green corrosion. The surface is in relatively poor condition, with recent damage and erosion as well as invasive corrosion.

Incomplete double-edged copper-alloy object, probably a knife. It consists of a small narrow tapered blade with a slight but broad rounded midrib, which smoothly flares into an expanded tang. Broken at both ends, the tang has the possible corroded remains of an incomplete central circular rivet hole. The object is in poor condition, with many recent (agricultural?) abrasion marks and scratches. The edges are very battered and there is some pitting due to invasive corrosion. The blade is also slightly bent near to the broken-off tip. Some original surface remains, with a mainly me…

Copper-alloy basal-looped or pegged spearhead, very worn and corroded. The base of the socket and possible loops, plus the tip, are missing, along with much of the wings. The wings were probably originally quite narrow, as edge bevels survive in two small areas. The midrib is rounded. Possible basal loops are suggested by spurs at the base of the wings, with gaps above. Although it is possible that the base of originally solid unlooped wings have merely corroded away leaving these spurs, and that this is therefore a pegged spearhead, the long narrow form and concave channels beside the…

County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Small fragment from the mouth of a copper-alloy socketed object. The socket is rounded and there is a slight mouth moulding. The fragment is too flimsy to have come from a socketed axe; it is probably from a socketed gouge or a leather worker's knife. There is a medium/dark green/grey patina all over the fragment, including the worn breaks, with frequent small patches of pale green invasive corrosion products. Surviving length 16.5 mm, surviving width 15 mm, maximum thickness thickness (at moulding) 3 mm, weight 2.95g. Late Bronze Age.

Fragment of bronze socketed axehead, including the loop and part of the socket mouth. There is no obvious mouth moulding, but this may have been lost to corrosion. The surfaces and the edges of the breaks are all very eroded and pocked by invasive corrosion. There is a medium brown and medium green patina with extensive paler green corrosion. Surviving length 33 mm, surviving thickness 22 mm, weight 13.78g. Late Bronze Age.

Copper-alloy socketed arrowhead with lozengiform cross-section. Although the wings are now incomplete, they seem always to have been very narrow. Although the socket end is also incomplete, there is no trace of side loops so this arrowhead was probably of pegged form. The tip is missing and the body is badly damaged with invasive corrosion. Undamaged areas have lengthways sharpening or cleaning grooves visible in a surface which is patinated a medium/dark green. County: Cambridgeshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Socket fragment, with loop, from a bronze socketed axehead. Apart from a slight mouth moulding there is no external decoration visible, although as the axehead is heavily encrusted with hard soil and corrosion it is possible that some decoration exists underneath. There is a prominent vertical cast seam running from the socket to the worn break down the inside of the main tool face. The main face is somewhat bent and twisted at the break. No obvious hammer breakage marks, but again it is possible that the encrustations are masking these. Pale to mid green patina. Surviving length…

Copper-alloy double-edged blade fragment, probably from a sword. The rounded midrib clearly narrows along the length of the fragment, suggesting that it is from near the tip of the blade. Although there are no definite hammer breakage marks, the edge of the blade is slightly bent next to one of the breaks suggesting possible deliberate breakage, which is common in fragmented swords from Late Bronze Age hoards. The fragment is in poor condition, with about 60% of the surface lost to corrosion; the surviving surface and the slightly worn breaks have a medium brown patination. The corr…
