Miniature chisel or flat axe made of copper or copper-alloy, missing butt end (unworn break). Slight bevel between body and blade facet. Medium green patina (also on break) with numerous small patches of surface loss, due to invasive corrosion, mainly appearing pale powdery green. One face has a series of recent surface scratches (probably agricultural). Surviving length 45 mm, blade width 27 mm, maximum thickness 6 mm, weight 26.71g. Similar example from Covehithe (COV 005), and slightly flanged examples from Mildenhall (MNL Misc., crn 00180) and Bentley (BTY 011).

Fragment of blade from chisel or axe made of copper or copper-alloy. Lacks obvious side casting seams so possibly from a small flat (or flanged?) axe. Both tips of the blade are missing. Some dark green/black patina on faces but mainly paler green due to corrosion products. All breaks are patinated pale/medium green, and are slightly worn. Some recent damage to one edge of main break. Surviving length 23 mm, surviving blade width 35 mm, maximum thickness 9 mm, weight 26.44g.

Record ID: SF5275
Object type: CHISEL
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published
Burnt and warped fragment of copper-alloy implement with very degraded lumpy surface. The shape suggests a square-sectioned shaft with two concave sides, which broaden below the shoulder to a break. Dark green/black patina with some paler green corrosion where the surface has broken away. Some recent damage to shoulder. Possibly from a lugged chisel/tracer of late Early Bronze Age to Late Bronze Age; compare examples from Freckenham (FRK 018) and Barton Mills (sf425/3579). Surviving length 34 mm, width of tang 7 mm, surviving width at blade break 14 mm, weight 9.12g.

Copper-alloy tanged and lugged tool, blade broken but probably chisel-ended. The tang is 4 mm wide and tapers from 4 mm thick at the junction with the blade, to a point at the other end. The blade starts 14 mm wide but quickly narrows with curving edges to 6 mm wide before flaring slightly to 8 mm wide at the (old) break. Deep brown patina. Surviving length 87 mm, weight 12.6g. Lugged chisels/tracers of related forms are found in chronologically widely separated contexts, from the Arreton tradition of the late Early Bronze Age to the Ewart Park phase of the Late Bronze Age.
