Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Northumberland
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Carved loom or net weight of unknown date (probably Bronze Age – Post Medieval 2150 BC – 1650 AD). The weight is sub circular in plan and sub-rectangular in cross section. It has an off-centre perforated hole (diameter: 9.5mm). The weight has been carved from Oolitic limestone. It measures 54.5mm length, 56.1mm width, is 16.7mm thick, and weighs 62.44 grams. It is very difficult to date this type of artefact as they are common finds from most archaeological periods. This example is relatively light, compared to other sized loom or fish weights. This might hint towards an i…

Object type: WEDGE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An unusual cast copper alloy / bronze wedge or possibly chisel formed from the recycled lower (blade) section of a looped palstave possibly decorated with a central rib. The palstave would date from the middle Bronze Age; however, it is difficult to say when it was made into a wedge. It is likely that this was done during either the later Middle Bronze Age or Late Bronze Age (1500-800 BC). The blade has been broken or deliberately trimmed at the junction point between the blade and the raised flanged stop ridge. It is difficult to ascertain more detail as the broken end has been repea…

Object type: VOTIVE MODEL
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Cast copper alloy votive model of a miniature wheel dated to the Late Bronze Age or Early Iron Age (1000-500 BC). The wheel is broadly sub-circular in plan with a broadly square shaped ‘axel’ from which four spokes radiate. The rim of the wheel is oval in cross section; however, it varies in thickness around its circumference. This variation is accentuated by abrasion which has removed significant areas of metal from specific areas. The central axel hole / perforation is an irregular square (diamond) shape with concave (bowed) sides and pointed corners. From each corner of the cent…

An unidentified object formed of cast copper alloy (bronze) of probable Middle or Late Bronze Age date (1500-800 BC). The artefact is sub-rectangular in plan and lentoid in cross section. It has, what seems, a deliberate prepared blade facet on all four sides, although one side is heavily eroded so it is difficult to be certain. The metal is a mid brown colour with a heavily abraded surface that has removed all traces of patina. In places light green active, powdery, corrosion is present. The form of the artefact is interesting - it is possibly all that remains of a razor / hog backed…

A fragment of highly leaded cast copper alloy of uncertain date. The fragment is undiagnostic being broadly rectangular in plan and triangular in section. The surface is a mid - light greenish grey colour and it is eroded in the ploughsoil. This type of artefact is not normally recorded, however it was recovered from close to the findspot of HESH-4E3374 and may hint at Late Bronze Age metalworking in the area. The fragment measures: 22.2mm length, 21.9mm width, is 5.7mm thick and weighs 6.00 grams

A cast copper alloy fragment of uncertain function and uncertain date (2000 BC - AD1500). The fragment is part of a larger item - it is semi-circular in plan and rectangular in profile. The exterior surface is heavily eroded and corroded and the original surface is now lost. It is a mid green colour with an abarded surface patina. Due to the size and thickness of this piece it seem most likely to be from the butt of an Early Bronze Age flat or flanged axe - most probably a Migdale type axe from the last phase of the Early Bronze Age (EBA III 2000 -1800 BC). However, due to the fragmen…

A thumbnail scraper of later Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date (2300 -1800BC). The scraper is formed on a fine, mid brown (toffee like) coloured good quality, tertiary oval shaped flake of flint. The ventral face shows the bulb and point of percussion as well as conchoidal ripples and bulbar scar; this shows that the flake was struck from a prepared striking platform. The dorsal face has several broad removals / flake facets most probably caused by other flakes being removed for tool production. Around the edges are areas of dense neat regular well applied secondary retouch . This ha…

Large fragment of a cast bronze / copper alloy sword blade of later Bronze Age date (1100 - 750 BC), The blade is rectangular in plan and tapers slightly in length. The long edges are abraded resulting in the loss of part of the cutting edge. The blade facets are present and the blade has been sharpened with long smooth marks from honing. The cross section of the blade is relatively flat with no sign of a raised central mid-rib. Both breaks (on the upper and lower edges) are relatively recent probably due to agriculture and the edges are fresh and unabraded - although they have slight…
