Gold penannular ring. A cast coiled round-section rod with 23 silver-grey bands around its outer surface, and with flat rounded opposed ends. A base metal core may be incorporated into the object, though is not visible to the naked eye. The banding confers a vermiform or grub-like appearance, but is worn from one side, and rendered indistinct on the other. Suggested date: late Bronze Age, 1000-800 BC. Submitted to the Treasure process: ref. 2020 T780. Diameter (of rod): 7.5mm, Length: 20.8mm, Height: 18.9mm, Thickness: 7.8mm, Weight: 15.27gms

Hoard, comprising 20 copper alloy objects, and four iron objects found within the same area. A Later Bronze Age date (1000-800 BC) was advanced before detailed recording. Of copper alloy objects, 19 were found on 12 July, with another (no. 1 below, found c.50m away) reunited with the rest on 19 July. The museum entry documentation lists: 3 sword fragments, 1 pointed tool, 1 sickle, 2 chisels or gouges, 2 socketed axeheads, 4 fragments of socketed axeheads, 2 spears + 1 spearhead found shortly afterwards by Mr Lemand, 1 curved knife, 4 copper alloy fragments, 4 iron objects which …

Pale grey flint with cortex, scraper. A naturally formed ‘pot lid’ fractured circular flake with a dense white patina indicating prolonged exposure to a calcareous environment. Cortex has been removed by a further central and natural pot lid fracture, and intermittent angled scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows the larger part of the curving edge. Odd chips appearing as if executed from the ventral aspect are probably the result of subsequent adventitious edge-on impacts. Copper alloy palstave axe. A small narrow cast palstave of sub-rectangular section with a crescentic cutting edge at one end, tapered towards a curved butt at the other; short [34mm] flanges appear on one side only towards this end, though the ghost of another flange may also appear on the opposite side hereabouts. The axe head is thickest around its midpoint. One side of the axe has received a recent chip towards the cutting edge. Before this damage was incurred, the object was already severely abraded, and perhaps incomplete as a result of faulty casting, which is suggested by a bub…

Pale grey flint barbed and tanged arrowhead. A large broad V-shaped barbed and tanged arrowhead of thin lentoid section bearing covering angled scalar retouch across both sides. The barbs are complete but the tang is lost to an ancient break, and the tip to a more recent break. The unusually broad form would maximise blood loss, weakening a quarry and enabling it to be trailed by hounds. Suggested date: Early Bronze aAe, 2350-1600 BC. Copper alloy palstave axe. Cast palstave axe with a wide [73.8mm] bevelled crescentic cutting edge to a narrower tapered blade with a central strengthening rib and thickened outer edges. The thickened ribs and side strips terminate on an angled stop for hafting appearing on both sides of the blade; a low [7.3mm high and 18mm long] loop appears on one side only. The butt of the axe is markedly flanged and of sub-rhomboid profile. The casting lines from the slightly misaligned halves of a two-piece mould appear along the top and bottom edges of the object. The cutting edge remains sharp…

Grey-brown flint possible scraper. A thin flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side by hard hammer, and with a rippled bulbar ventral surface. Short abrupt retouch executed from the ventral aspect follows a short part of the edge, and a long narrow scar may suggest very slight but deliberate trimming of the bulb. The flat part of the edge is also battered. Suggested date: Early to Mid Bronze Age, 2350-1000 BC. Length: 29.1mm, Width: 34.5mm, Thickness: 6.8mm, Weight: 7.71gms

Opaque grey flint scraper. A thick flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side by casually executed multangular hard hammer strike, and with a bulb and adjacent hollow on its ventral side. Light traces of misty patina have formed over struck surfaces, but were removed by limited angled scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect on a short part of the edge. This may suggest a crudely made scraper has been discarded and subsequently picked up and re-used after minimal reworking. Opaque grey flint with reformed cortex, scraper. A flat flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side by casually executed hard hammer striking, and with a pronounced bulb at the butt end of the ventral surface. A rounded hollow appears on one side, with apparently reformed cortex along that edge, a little of which was either trimmed by short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect or lost to an adventitious edge-on impact. It is possible that a holed or hollowed nodule was selected to form a shaft-trimming tool. The finder kindly suggests an identification as a hollow sc…

Grey flint with cortex, possibly collected from the East Coast, possible scraper. A thin L-shaped flake with cortex trimmed from its dorsal side by hard hammer strike and by short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect at either end of its 'arms', and with a bulb at the angle of the ventral surface. Very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect also defines an angled notch, possibly indicating the perfunctory manufacture of a hollow scraper. Patches of misty patina have formed over struck surfaces and on part of the ventral surface, suggesting a limited period of e…
