A copper-alloy ring or ferrule of uncertain date or function. The ring has a 'D'shaped cross section. The external diameter is 23.97mm. The band has a thickness of 2.60mm and width of 11.87mm. The internal surface of the band is slightly rough which might suggest that this was not used as a finger-ring but some form of unidentified ferrule. The outer surface is decorated with three parallel grooves following the circumference of the band. This decoration forms four raised parallel lines that gives the appearance of a coil. Weight is 10.5g. Peter Reavill comments "patina definately s…

A complete copper-alloy (bronze) palstave of Middle Bronze Age date. This form of axe fits into the primary, or early phase, palstaves being specifically of group III c.1500-1300 BC, which corresponds with Acton Park II and Taunton metalworking assemblages (Needham Period 5) - and with Burgess's Metal Working Stage VIII and IX. The artefact has a single shield shaped decoration positioned below the fused stop, and a subtle lateral single mid-rib below the shield. The cast side flanges are fused to the stop ridge and the blade is a crescentic or splayed fan shape. The axe has a t…

Description: The 'East Cambridgeshire' torc is a four-flange twisted bar torc of Middle Bronze Age date, known to belong to the Penard phase of c.1300-1150 BC (Taylor 1980, 62; Needham 2001; Roberts 2007). It is made of three separate components: two very similar, undecorated, bent-back, 'trumpet'-shaped, terminals affixed at either end of an exceptionally long (126.5cms, excluding the terminals) spiral twisted bar with very regular cruciform (i.e. '+' shaped) cross-section. The advantages of casting such an elaborate torc in three pieces is discussed by Taylor (1980, 61-2). A neat …

An incomplete fragment of a copper-alloy (bronze) flanged axe or possibly a palstave of late Early Bronze Age or Middle Bronze Age date (2000-1500 BC). The fragment is rectangular in plan and broadly H shaped in cross section. All that remains of the axe is the tip of the butt which is rounded in shape - a small area of the septum survives and the raised side flanges expand along both edges. These flanges are slight and seem to be either cast or hammer raised - they do not appear to be like those of Palstaves but the fragment is too small to be diagnostic. The break has occurred acros…

A slightly incomplete barbed and tanged flint arrowhead of Early to Middle Bronze Age date 2400-1001 BC. The tip of one barb has broken off but this appears to be the only area of damage to the artefact. This artefact has a very flattened oval cross section. The retouch is short to long but definately not invasive or covering resulting in a large central area on both surfaces of flat non-retouched flint, possibly due to the presence of an impurity through the centre of the arrowhead. The retouch is parallel with an area that appears to be scaled. The angle of this retouch is semi-a…

A fragment of copper alloy which appears to be an incomplete section of a blade. It is possible that this fragment is a small part of a blade of Bronze Age date (c.2350-801BC). Weight is 14.3g, incomplete length is 29.65mm, width is 25.31mm and thickness is 4.76mm. The cross section was probably originally a flattish oval with the edges tapering out very thin, now mostly missing. The upper and lower surfaces do not seem to have had a higher point/ridged longitudinal centre despite the presence of corrosion product and some patches where the original surface seems to be missing.
