Object type: RING
Broad period: BRONZE AGE

A copper-alloy ring or ferrule of uncertain date or function. The ring has a 'D'shaped cross section. The external diameter is 23.97mm. The band has a thickness of 2.60mm and width of 11.87mm. The internal surface of the band is slightly rough which might suggest that this was not used as a finger-ring but some form of unidentified ferrule. The outer surface is decorated with three parallel grooves following the circumference of the band. This decoration forms four raised parallel lines that gives the appearance of a coil. Weight is 10.5g. Peter Reavill comments "patina definately s…

Object type: AXE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy fragment of a Bronze Age axe. The breaks are uneven and show signs of wear, suggesting ancient breaks. This fragment is the curved section of the blade, which is blunt. This fragment is quite un-daignostic, and so closer dating and classification is difficult. Axes begin as flat axes at the start of the Bronze Age period and then develop into palstaves and then to socketed axes. Many axes would have been used as modern axes are used as a tool for chopping wood and organic materials. Some however have been described as ingots and as votive offerings. They can…

A very worn fragment of Middle to Late Bronze Age (1500 BC - 800 BC) copper alloy socketed spearhead, consisting of the very tip only. It measures 43.64mm in length and max.14.44x8.96mm at the (old) break. It weighs 13.2g. The midrib is circular in cross-section, the blades either side triangular in cross-section. A flint scraper made on a natural flake, dating to the later prehistoric period, probably the Bronze Age or later. The scraper has been made on an oval flake of grey-white flint with a brown, iron-stained outer cortex. A spool has popped of from the dorsal surface. These are naturally occuring breaks and can occur because of fragilities in the flint; extreme temperature changes can cause spooling (for example if water infiltrates the rock then swells due to freezing) as can pressure. Minimal retouching around one half of the dorsal lateral suggests this tool was used as a scraper. Int…

A cast copper alloy object. This is probably a blade of Bronze Age date, suggested by the patina of the copper alloy. The object is triangular in section, being 6mm thick at its widest and tapering to a sharp narrow convex edge. The widest edge is slightly convex. It is eliptical in plan. it is 41mm long, 13mm wide and 66mm thick. It weighs 8.66g. No exact replica has been found for this object. It is possibly the blade edge of a Bronze Age axe head. However, the wede edge is very regular and unliley to be a broken edge. The Bronze Age Finds Advisor of teh British Museum has been…
