A worn post-Medieval copper-alloy Nuremberg Jetton, of anonymous 'ship-penny' type (c. 1490-1550). The jetton has been punctured, perhaps to serve as a pendant, and is folded in two places. Obverse: sailing ship with rigging and sail. Reverse: Four fleur-de-lis in a lozenge. Inscriptions on both faces are illegible. Maker unknown. Mint unknown. The jetton is 24.5mm in diameter, 0.6mm in thickness, and weighs 1.2g.

SVBDVCENDIS RATIONIBVS reverse type depicting unclear winged figure standing right facing unclear image. A similar jetton has been recorded as BERK-398DE5 which described the reverse as depicting Mercury standing on left holding caduceus and spear, facing a naked female captive to the right, who is tied to a tree though this cannot be determined on the current example. Copper-alloy French jetton minted at Tournai, AD 1497-1521. Obverse shows three circles of Tournai, reverse shows a cross. The inscriptions cannot be read. There is a square pierced hole cutting through the edge of one circle on the obverse, and neatly in one quarter of the cross on the reverse. English jettons at this time are always pierced to distinguish them from coins. Compare YORYM-2AF7A9 (also pierced) and BERK-C96E20.

A copper-alloy post-medieval rose/orb jetton, probably issued by the Nuremberg Master Hans Krauwinckel II, active c.1586-1635 AD. Legend not visible on either side. This jetton has been pierced with a 3.8mm circular hole in the position of 6 o'clock, cutting through both legend and central motif. The jetton has been folded over 12 o'clock to 2 o'clock (when the jetton is viewed with the orb face uppermost). Weight 1.2g, diameter 24.91. Compare SUSS-088C0D. In the photo, the black cross is put above the position of the cross on the orb.

The first Jettons of this type were struck towards the end of the fifteenth century, and borrowed the 'Imperial orb within treasure' design popular on German gold coinage (Mitchiner 1988, 353).
