An incomplete copper alloy or base silver contemporary copy of a silver post-medieval shilling of Charles I (1625-1649). Uncertain type and initial mark, London mint 1625-1649. The coin is missing much of its edge and is bent and broken through the centre of the coin. This suggests that it might have been deliberately snapped to take it out of circulation when it was discovered to be a counterfeit.

A lightly clipped Post-medieval, silver, shilling of Elizabeth I (AD 1558-1603) dating AD 1560-61. Initial mark: cross crosslet. As North Volume 2: 1985.
Obverse: Crowned bust facing left. The face has been worn away and there is an eight pointed star (saltire overlying a cross); scratched into the surface of the coin in front of the bust.
Reverse: Square shield on long cross fourchee dividing legend. There are two saltires scratched into the surface above the shield; either side of the vertical arm of the cross fourchee.
