A Roman Republican silver chariot denarius coin of the moneyers C. Gargonius, Ogulnius and M. Vergilius, dating from c.86BC and minted in Rome.  The obverse shows the head of Apollo wearing a laurel wreath, although abrasion has resulted in the loss of much of the original detail of the head. There is some decoration on the outside edge of the obverse, but no detail is apparent and most of it has worn away.  The reverse depicts the four horse chariot, with some decorative detail on and near the outside edge, but this is now worn away.  The coin is …

A silver Roman 'Legionary' denarius of Mark Antony (BC 42-30) dating to 32-31 BC (Reece Period 1).  The obverse is very worn but the outline of a boat can be discerned although the legend is illegible. The reverse legend is also illegible but the central image of the aquila standard and one other standard are visible.  These coins were struck by Mark Antony between 32-31 BC in travelling mints for use by his fleets in the lead up to the Battle of Actium. A complete silver republican denarius, issued by L. Valerius Flaccus, Cos 100, in 108 to 107 BC (Reece Period 1). Minted at Rome. Reverse type: Mars walking left, holding spear with point downwards. The obverse has been countermarked. Diameter: 18.4 mm Thickness: 1.7 mm Weight: 2.4 g. The figure of Mars and the apex on the reverse together recall the fact that the moneyer's father, Cos. 131, held the office of Flamen Martialis (an office probably held at the time of this issue by the Albinus of Cicero, Brutus 135, but later to be held by the Consul of 100).
