Obverse: hENRICVS REX III; Crowned bust facing without sceptre. The face is broad with no neckline. The beard is formed with three pellets to each side of a central chin pellet. King's hair-curls depicted by pellet-in-crescent motifs. Start of legend is marked by a sharp pointed star, straddling the central crown ornament.

A Medieval silver voided short cross penny of Henry III (AD 1216 - 1272), Class 7a, struck by the moneyer Abel in Lincoln. Short cross coinage came into existence in the reign of Henry II, AD 1180 - 1189, and continued until AD 1247, whereafter long cross coinage was introduced.
