Robertson 2000, 173 no. 740A:
""The hoard was found in September 1989 by Mr Christopher Conway using a metal detector in a field near Welder's Lane, Chalfont St Peter, Buckinghamshire, and was excavated by the finder with the help of members of the local metal-detecting club over the next three months. M E Farley and Andrew Hunn, of Buckinghamshire County Museum subsequently examined the site.
The coins were contained in four pots, of which nos. I, II and III were buried close together, with no. IV at a distance of four metres. Pot I was a narrow-necked wheel-thrown jar of dark grey coarse-grained ware with at least three shoulder grooves and a band of combed scroll, possibly emanating from the Alice Holt potteries at Farnham in Surrey, and dated to the mid-third to early fourth centuries AD. Pot II was a plain wheel-thrown flask of light blue-grey ware, probably a product of an Oxfordshire pottery. Pots III and IV were both wheel-thrown vessels, the former a flask, and both local products of coarse-grained quartz tempered fabric, with a dark blue-grey surface. Pot III, which was almost complete, had to be broken to allow the removal of the coins. It produced over three thousand coins, by far the most of all the pots as can be seen from Table 1. Only half of pot IV was recovered..
[Information regarding pots from M E Farley and Val Rigby. Drawing of pots by Val Rigby].
"The total number of coins in the hoard was 6,682, distributed amongst the pots as indicated in the tables... At a Coroner's Inquest at High Wycombe on 31 October 1990, all the silver coins minted before the reign of Trebonius Gallus (333 pieces) were declared Treasure Trove..
C. Cheesman, in CHRB IX (1992), 154-205, mints, photos of 237 coins.
The 6,682 coins in the four pots (and in a small scatter of coins about them) were 15 AE, 45 den., 2511 ant. of the Central Empire; 3560 ant. of the Gallic Empire; 197 irregular coins; and 354 uncertain coins:
