Description

De Jersey (2014):

"Holman (2005a) provides as full an account of this discovery as we are likely to obtain. In May 1980 Chris Bailey of the Kent Numismatic Society examined 67 cast bronze coins found in late 1979 about halfway down the south-facing slope of Round Hill, "scattered over an area of approximately 3 m wide by 30 m down the hillside" (Bailey, quoted in Holman 2005a, 385). Bailey suggested that the coins were Massiliot issues rather than Kentish derivatives, an opinion reflected in the occasional mentions of the find in earlier literature (e.g. Haselgrove 1987, 279 no. 28).
In contrast Holman (2005a, 386) argues that it is "virtually certain that these coins were produced locally." Given the heavy weight and relatively fine style of many of the coins, they are thus presumably among the earliest examples of this type manufactured in Britain.
The 67 coins were recorded at the British Museum; five were retained and the remainder returned to the finder. The CCI has weights and images of 62. It is possible that the hoard contained rather more than the 67 coins seen by Bailey, since it is known that other detectorists visited the site after the discovery became known, but it seems unlikely that the total was very significantly higher."
