Description

Robertson 2000, 219 no. 890:

""As some workmen in the summer of 1839 were excavating in the line of the Birmingham and Gloucester railroad in this parish, they found at a depth of about two feet in the earth, under the spreading boughs of a very large and ancient pollard elm, just by Bredicot court, a small Roman urn of red clay 41/8 inches high, 11½ inches round the middle, 6 inches round the neck, and 4 inches round the foot. In shape it resembles a skittle, and I am informed there were about 140 small copper coins in it."
These were distributed among the workmen, but the urn and 62 coins were recovered. The 62 coins, all ant., were:
Ant.
Gallienus 7
Salonina 1
Postumus 1
Victorinus 9
Claudius II 11
Tetricus (I and II (?)) 24
Probus 1
Carausius 4
uncertain radiates 4

62
-J. Allies, Hist. and Ant. of Worcs., 2 ed. (1852), 95, fig. of pot
-The pot is now in Worcester City Museum. It is a small beaker, 4 in. high, and 3½ in. wide, of fairly hard brown clay, with narrow upright neck, bulbous body and fairly narrow footstand. About 40 of the coins were acquired by the Worcester City Museum, but were incorporated in the general coin collection, and have not been located.
Pot drawn, 1938 (ASR)"
