Description

Robertson 2000, 207-209 no. 854:

"A hoard of close on 50,000 antoniniani has recently been examined by Dr. R. Bland and Dr. A.M. Burnett, Dept. of Coins and Medals, BM (cp. Britannia, XVII (1986), 390):
"The hoard was found on 8 December 1985 by Mr Tom Cook, while using a metal detector in field about half a mile east of Ermine Street in the parish of Normanby, Lincolnshire [...], some twelve miles north of the city of Lincoln and about one and a half miles north of the Roman settlement of Owmby.
It was contained in a large jar, and the finder dug a large hole to recover the jar. He reported that it was buried with its top about one feet below the surface of the ploughed field, and that its top was covered by a large stone, which he subsequently lost. The finder disturbed the immediate area of the pot, but the general vicinity was examined very shortly after by Brian Simmons of the Trust for Lincolnshire Archaeology. His examination of the surface of the surrounding field revealed that there had once been a substantial stone building there, situated on the southern slope of a modest ridge; the outline of some plough-damaged walls could still be discerned. There was the usual surface scatter of Roman debris, consisting of pottery, building stone and some tiles. The building probably represents an outlier, perhaps a farm, of the much larger settlement at Owmby. The hoard's pot seems probably to have been buried just (i.e. one or two feet) outside the north wall of the building.
The hoard was delivered to the British Museum for cleaning and study, and was the subject of a Treasure Inquest on 19 May 1987, where it was found not to be Treasure Trove, in view of the low silver content of the coins, and consequently became the property of the land owner. The hoard was immediately sold by the land owner to a coin dealer, and the British Museum was only subsequently able to acquire 550 (instead of the 1775 it originally wanted) coins from him by purchase.
The remainder of the hoard has now been dispersed, largely abroad.
The composition of the hoard
The hoard consisted of a total of 47912 coins; as can be seen from the summary in Table 1, the vast majority of the coins were of the emperors Gallienus (260-68) and Claudius II (268-70), and of the Romano-Gallic emperors Victorinus (269-71) and the Tetrici (271-74). The latest coins in the hoard were the 73 [4 irregular] of the Romano-British usurper Carausius (268-93)... All come from the first part of his reign and... none seem to be later than c. 290..
The 47912 coins were 9 den. and 12409 ant. of the Gallic Empire; 33163 ant. of the Gallic Empire; 69 ant. of the British Empire; and 2262 irregular coins (2188 struck, including 1 den. of Severus, and 4 ant. of Carausius, and 74 cast):

Notes

BM Register of Coin Accessions, 1987-6-47 and 1987-9-11 The 8 uncertain mint coins from the sole reign of Gallienus have been omitted from the Normanby summary on Bland and Burnett 1988, p.115 - the total should therefore be 47920.
