A Medieval - Post Medieval crudely cast, lead alloy large sized, bifacetoken of Powell type 3
The token is roughly circular in plan, sub-rectangular in cross section and biface (with decoration on both sides). The decoration consists of a 7 spokes extending from a central raised circular pellet. There are two concentric raised borders also, one at the edge of the token and another about half way along its diamater. The reverse token possibly has the same design although this is not much more faded and hard with an inner border that is more sub-triangular shaped than circular.
The token is a medium grey colour. The token is no longer flat being warped in several decoration with one segment being folded almost to 90 degrees.
The token is 24.6mm in diameter, 1.6mm thick and weighs 5.46 grams.
Lead tokens had a wide variety of potential uses such as tallies, gaming pieces, tickets, weights, etc. and are believed to have been locally produced; they are therefore difficult to date precisely. There are numerous tokens with a similar spoked wheel design on the database including those with initials on the reverse (such as KENT-0241F3), those that are uniface (such as DENO-6B3D4E) and those that are similarly coarse as this example (such as HESH-51E69F). This token classifies as a Powell type 3 as it is a spoked wheel that has at least five segments (the type needing 3 or more excluding some quartered forms). Powell (2012) comments that Type 1, 31, and 3 are designs which were commonly made stock and occur in large quantities, dating to the late 16th to mid 19th centuries.
