An incomplete Roman Colchester derivative brooch, from the 1st century AD. The brooch has been cast in copper alloy. The remaining part of the brooch consists of an almost complete bow (with the foot and catchplate missing), complete wings and part of the external chord from the spring mechanism. The bow is short and tapering, with a raised ridge running down its spine. The ridge is made up of a wide flat ridge with a taller strip down the middle; raised borders also flank the edges of the bow. The wings survive in full but are worn. The spring mechanism does not survive. The surviving fragment of wire sits parallel to the wings, and rests inside the loop on top of the wings. The pin is also obviously missing. It is impossible to say how long the bow would have originally been. The metal is very worn and very corroded. The surface is pitted. The metal has a light greyish-green colour. This brooch is similar to examples in Hattatt, 2000, pp297, Fig. 156.
