Copper alloy finger ring fragment. Cast flat octagonal bezel and facetted shoulders of a signet ring; the rest of the band is lost. The bezel is occupied by the prominently bordered and crudely engraved motif of a lis. The shoulders of the ring have a narrow [3mm] flat strip flanked by broader bevelled surfaces. The angular frame of the matrix is characteristic of the later medieval period (Pateman 2008, page 107). The lis might refer to Marian devotion or French affinity. Suggested date: Late Medieval, 1425-1500

Length: 21.8mm, Width (bezel): 13.4mm, Thickness (at shoulders): 2.7mm, Weight: 3.56gms

Class: Signet
