Copper alloy finger ring. Cast signet ring with an oval bezel bearing a W rendered as two deeply incised V-shaped cuts, appearing doubled, and with a schematic open crown above it defined by angled cuts. This may refer to a personal name or to the Marian shrine at Walsingham, the former perhaps more likely in the context of a signet ring, and pointing to the use of an English style of personal nomenclature. The band diminishes in width at its D-section shoulders, and has acquired a round section by its narrowest point opposite the bezel. The motif suggests a later medieval date (Pateman, B. 2008, An illustrated guide to collecting seals, Whitehall Press, London, page 107). Suggested date: Late Medieval to Early Post-Medieval, 1475-1525

Internal diameter: 22.4mm, Band Width (at bezel): 8.9mm, Thickness (at shoulder): 3.2mm, Weight: 5.92gms

Class: Signet
Inscription: W
