Silver pierced Post Medieval Venetian soldino issued by Doge Leonardo Loredan (1436-1521AD), dating to 1501-1521AD. The obverse has the Doge, as standard bearer of Venice, kneeling left, receiving the banner of St. Mark from the patron saint. The legend reads LEO.LAV·DVX·S.M.V.
Reverse has the standing figure of Christ with halo, holding a cross right. The legend reads LAVS·TIBI·SOLI
Diameter: 12.2mm; weight: 0.24g
Notes:
The coin has been pierced which may indicate a secondary function which would normally indicate that it should be considered as potential treasure. However, since coins of this period with similar piercings appear in hoards of currency, it suggests that such objects could re-enter circulation as coins. It cannot, therefore, be said with confidence whether this particular object was regarded as a coin or as an item of jewellery at the time of deposition.
