A copper alloy farthing token of Richard Rogers of Helston, dated to 1658 on the obverse which is not usual. The obverse bears the Mercers' arms, a portrait of a mermaid, and the inscription RICHARD ROGERS 1658, but the letters ERS have been overstamped over ROG so that the surname is condensed. The reverse inscription IN HELSTON can just be seen around an inner circle with the initials R / R T arranged in a triangle, with the first R at the apex of the triangle. A token by Richard Rogers of Helston is referenced in Coins and Tokens of Cornwall 1985 on p.26, no.6 (20), dated to 1668, and illustrated on p.30. In the 1668 example the date is on the reverse rather than the obverse as in this example, and the date is 10 years later, but the arrangement of the initials is the same as in this example.
