A fragment comprising just over half of a  Medieval continental imitation of an Edwardian sterling penny or 'Crockard' of John I (1261-1294), Duke of Brabant 1267-1294. dating to the period 1267-1294. Minted at Brussels or Louvain.  Mayhew (1983) no 43 var..

Measurements: Diameter: 18.78mm. Weight: 0.8g.

Crockards appeared in England during Edward I's reign when there was a coin shortage.  Edward instituted a reform of the coinage in 1279-80, intending to fund his Welsh campaigns.  However, it was too successful with good English coins leaving the country, although prohibited, for use in Europe.  The shortage remained, even when European rulers produced their own imitations of the English coins, which were usually lighter and less valuable than the Engish - hence they were known as "crockards", flooding in during the 1290's.  There was an attempt to demonetise these coins in 1300 but fluctuations in the supply of coin in the first decades of the 14th century caused grave problems.
